The safest possible plays in order:

1. Take the incoming foul.
2. Run the clock out.
3. Try and get an exclamation point dunk.

Tyshawn arguably should have done #1 but tried to do #2.

Elijah wanted #3.

The thing about #2, though, it means the steal wins you the game.
that still lends itself to blaming Tyshawn moreso than EJ

thats a tough pass to thread regardless of circumstance. Take the foul.
I don't think the pass is that tough if EJ did what he was supposed to do and what Tyshawn thought he was going to do, which is stay out towards the perimeter to dribble the clock out.

Maybe up Tyshawn's blame for not predicting that Elijah would do something boneheaded.
ehh, I guess I just see it different. I think the only correct play there (not to say other things wouldn't be possible or work) is to hold the ball, take the foul. Hit the FTs and go up 2 possessions. Anything else is unnecessary risk given the circumstance.

Correct.
( or dribble to the corner and then take the foul )

To avoid the incoming foul and FT attempts.

(only reason I even remember this play that well is b/c Ty was on a podcast recently talking about this very play)

FT attempted woulda sealed it too though. Go up 2 possessions.

Which is why Ty gets some blame.

I think running clock out is pretty safe and smart. If Elijah doesn't take the riskiest option, the horn sounds.

Granted, if Ty also takes the riskiest option, we would have gotten the dunk. And knowing both those guys and that team, it's a little surprising they both didn't go for the dunk.

2 FT attempts is not as sure as a buzzer.

There's six seconds left.
You're in the double bonus.
Ty gets most of the blame.

I remember watching that and saying "Wow, Tyshawn just summed up his career perfectly". Do something amazing, and do something really dumb.

It was an experience.

As that team and Remy Martin reminded us, though, you can't safe play your way to NCAA glory.

Does discussion of "the worst shot you can take in basketball at that time" belong here?

Talking about Shady? Was wondering if that would be brought up.

I think he catches too much flak for that. Just out there playing and got us 2 quick points that were much needed.

It's only a bad shot if it misses. Shots that go in are good shots.

Particularly when you're talking about a guy who took a very limited number of outside shots...I'd MUCH rather he shoot a 19-footer in rhythm (which he did) than try to take a dribble-stepback 3 (which is what Raftery said he should have done).

And EJ hit a very bad shot to the balls and look where that got us.

Absolutely. Stepback is so hard and no reason to think we'd get a good look from 3 by swinging the ball and taking more time off the clock.

How about the screen and release to get DMac matched up with Manek?
If Bacot is on him, that offensive rebound would have been a tougher task - but Bacot can't initially help too much because Jalen was doing the ol' attack the basket and clean up this shit Wilson.
