good post. only thing i'd add is that the polls tend to iron themselves out over the course of the season in a natural way. so, maybe not "abolish" the polls, but we should know to not take them seriously at all until late-January?

It's basically a statistical fact that people think they are better drivers than they actually are.

So, the question you might ask yourself instead: on average, do you trust another driver or a self driving car more?

To tie it into sports and KenPom: this is why Vegas always ends up winning.
Its a good question. I still think I trust another person driving than a machine. Theres a lot if peripheral information and terrain considerations that I think the machine is not able to account for as well as a living being. I am inherently distrustful of machines, regardless of statistics. I am not a futurists, perhaps to a fault.

Make it start Jan 1. Make it a rule that no one is eligible to be ranked until they have played 4 conference games, I don't know. I 100% agree that they shouldn't be taken seriously for a while still.

I'd love to see statistics broken down by the specific week ranked in the AP Poll. I'd put a heck of a lot more weight behind a Top 5 ranking in Week 15 than I would in Week 5.

This site made an attempt to do it but fell a bit short.

https://collegepollarchive.com/index.cfm

Interesting but not all it could be. A few college interns could fatten out that database and it's not a big investment to update their website to make it really good. Oh well. Random blabbing of the night.

The difference being that when Vegas is wrong someone loses money - when a self-driving car is wrong someone gets injured or dies.
Sure. The analogy doesn't quite fully work for me.

Lundardi has us as the #1 overall seed today.

We're not that good, but we always put together such a solid resume.

I didn't think a Sweet 16 game in KC was likely this season, but it's trending that direction.

Rinse, repeat.

About 1/4 of the seasons you can cross out the not and the but. But this applies the other 3/4 of the time.

The Big 12 streak gets mentioned a lot, but it's Bill's run of 4 seeds or higher that makes him one of the greatest of all time--going to end up in the same breath as K. And most of those are 1's and 3's with some 2's sprinkled in.

No. 2 in the AP poll. 22 first place votes, Houston gets 34.

Houston is really good and continues to play well. It would have been had to argue anyone other than Houston over KU for No. 1 this week.

5. Tennessee
10. Texas
11. Kansas State
14. Iowa State
17. TCU
18. Wisconsin
20. Missouri
24. Duke

In their defense, they didn't suck this bad until after their PG went down against us. I don't know enough to assess their depth at each position, but most teams don't get better after losing their starting PG to injury.

For the second time in as many home games, Kansas found itself down double-digits in the second half Tuesday night, trailing an unranked Oklahoma team that opened the season with a loss to Sam Houston State. For the second time in as many home games, Kansas still figured out a way to avoid being upset, this time by closing on a 18-4 run that lifted the Jayhawks to a 79-75 victory and pushed their record to 15-1 overall, 4-0 in the Big 12.

"We've been battle-tested so much this year, especially with close games, [and] we always find a way to stay composed," said Kansas forward Jalen Wilson, who finished with 17 points and eight rebounds. "We just continued to play our ball. … There wasn't a time when I thought the game was over because I know we're always going to find a way to win."

Sure seems that way.

The Jayhawks were down 15 points in the second half against Oklahoma State two Saturdays ago but still won 69-67. They were down 10 points with less than six minutes to play against Oklahoma late Tuesday but still won 79-75. On one hand, perhaps it's concerning that KU has now been pushed twice at home by unranked teams in the past 11 days. But on the other hand, like Wilson noted, the Jayhawks stayed composed both times, rallied impressively and won to push Bill Self's record to 301-16 inside Allen Fieldhouse, which is among the most astonishing records for any person working in any sport today.

Kansas remains No. 3 in Wednesday morning's updated CBS Sports Top 25 And 1 daily college basketball rankings. Next up is a home game on Saturday against Iowa State. TJ Otzelberger's Cyclones are 13th in the Top 25 And 1 and tied with Kansas and Kansas State atop the Big 12 standings with a 4-0 league mark...

I hope that this “oh yea we can pull it out” attitude doesn’t get so entrenched that all of a sudden we are on the wrong end of a 69-67 game.

we will inevitably lose games, head scratching games...we always do.

But....the fight, never give up, mental toughness built in these games pays dividends later. They KNOW they CAN come back. Thats invaluable. We don't have to go very far back in history to prove why that's important in a teams make up.

I would maybe argue the metrics should have us around 9, but our weekly AP ranking might need to be around 15.
