If you were a 1 and done frehsman PG why would you come to KU? That's the 1 position we almost never have a freshman thrive in during their 1st year under Self.

"And at least one of those two hats (or maybe both) isn't fitting right in terms of freshman guards."
Hi, my name is Gradey Dick, I play(ish) for the Toronto Raptors now but played for you last season and was 2nd team AllB12. Did you already forget me?

Yes. Probably have to distinguish between guard and point guard. It hasn't always been that way, but it has been like that in a few years in recent memory.

In my head, I have Gradey as a wing.

I consider Gradey a shooting guard.

He's both.
The small forward is kind of a mush position in most offenses now.

He's off-ball.
Our problem has been with guys who are (or should be) on-ball.

The top 1 and done PGs go to Kentucky. Calipari has a ton of success with them (indivudally, not team success necessarily)...UK focuses on individual success (draft position) a lot more than KU does.
Take a look around the NBA and there are a shitload of former Calipari PGs and SGs.
And yet Self and KU are way better at winning CBB games than Calipari and UK.

Elmarko was a top 5 PG in his class - even as high as 3rd as a 5 star depending on where you look.

Has to be one of our highest rated PG recruits in the Self era, right?
I think Elmarko will be really good if he stays at KU. But I don't like freshman PGs in a Bill Self offense.

Dotson was up there too.
Higher depending on which source.
Chalmers was considered a point and probably is also one of the highest ranked we've had I'd think.
But the highest would be Selby. Dude was no. 1 overall not just no. 1 PG.

(And of course he was really not very good at all - just gets bailed out, reputation-wise, by a hot-shooting start.)

McCullar has the biggest jump from .507 to .707.
KJ jumps from .473 to .549.

McCullar is the 4th player since the 3 point line was established to average 18+ points and 4+ assists at Kansas for a season ( he is the only one from that group to average 5+ rebounds making him the only player to do so - 18+ ppg, 4+ apg, 5+ rpg ).
Can you name the other 3?
