Backcourt

Eh.
Harris was better statistically last season than EJ and Tharpe in their best seasons.
And then, one thing you just skip over is, well, Harris is the reigning B12 DPOY.
Did you forget that?
I'd put him squarely in the middle of those guys.
BIFM
Sherron
Vonte
Devon
Tyshawn
Dajuan
Elijah
Tharpe

If we could combine the good from Elmarko Furphy and Timberlake we'd have a 1 and Done caliber 5th starter.KUTradition wrote: ↑Thu Jan 11, 2024 9:24 am Elmarko is just too damn tentative and quick to defer of offense. he needs to have Furphy’s mentality (not on jumpers, but on getting his shot generally). he can score (he played well against tcu) and play D, so it’s not at all a talent issue
Re: Backcourt
Furphy won't be ready until next season. His defense is bad, very bad. He's going to improve but he needs another off-season to get stronger. But he has very high potential, and this season there will be games he gives us a big offensive spark off the benchDeletedUser wrote: ↑Wed Jan 10, 2024 8:59 pmI seriously have to ask....do you watch the KU games? All of them?
Because Furphy has not been great. He's a walking mistake waiting to happen.
Elmarko has been so much better than Furphy. Not even close.

Re: Backcourt
Agreed. Especially about the defense. And the way we play defense if 1 guy is lost or fucking up it totally negates the great defense we get from Kj KM and DH.Sasquatch wrote: ↑Thu Jan 11, 2024 10:13 amFurphy won't be ready until next season. That's why HD has meshed better than expected defensively (in my eyes). He really seems to understand spacing and angles that allows him to hide his individual deficiencies behind the great team defense we play (at least periodically) due to DH KM and Kj being so familiar with each other and what "we" are trying to do on that side of the ball.
Re: Backcourt
His defense last night wasn't very bad.
He was alright and pretty active.
He was a bit late on a close out on a key three pointer but he still managed to get some coverage.
Had at least 1 steal and was the defensive reason for a jump ball.

Re: Backcourt
Same. Maybe a slightly bigger gap between Ty and DH and a gap between the top 3 and Dotson.
I do think it's conceivable to come to the conclusion that DH makes those around him better than Ty did though.
Re: Backcourt
Counterpoint - Tyshawn's best season, 2012, had Conner Teahan and Kevin Young playing major minutes.

don't dog on KY just to try and make some point.
KY was a valued member of that squad.

Re: Backcourt
yeah, i think his D is improving as the game slows down for him
Have we fallen into a mesmerized state that makes us accept as inevitable that which is inferior or detrimental, as though having lost the will or the vision to demand that which is good?

Re: Backcourt
I just think it's hard to swap he for Elmarko due to the speed gap. Makes switching harder and can get us in some bad mismatches.KUTradition wrote: ↑Thu Jan 11, 2024 10:39 amyeah, i think his D is improving as the game slows down for him
Re: Backcourt
But in our situation, we need scoring more than we need defense.
Dajuan, McCullar and KJ are excellent defenders.

Like I said, closer to the Elijah/Milf end.
But yea, fair point about being a better defender

Re: Backcourt
Yes, but to hide HDs deficiencies we really need the other 4 to understand the team concept because of all the switching. And Elmarko is far superior to Furphy in that regard.
Maybe I am way overvaluing that. And the offset of shooting would be a net gain for the team.

Re: Backcourt
I thought about this:
Have we run many plays for Elmarko?
I know I know, we rarely run plays for a freshman, and particularly for a freshman who hasn’t exactly been lighting the world on fire anyway.
But maybe we could?
Not scheme our entire gameplan around it. But maybe few plays a game for which we try to get him a bounce-or-two (or less) angle at the hoop.
But maybe it’s chicken and egg as getting him some confidence. And maybe it’s something defenses wouldn’t expect and haven’t even scouted.
But, I know I know, I’m dumb.

Re: Backcourt
Why should we "run plays" for Elmarko?
Also, you do realize 99% of our plays have multiple options as they progress. We rarely "run plays" for a single person.
