my thing has always been that isn’t about the deeds you do throughout your life, but rather what really matters is that you ascribe to arbitrary mores
e.g. having to “accept” Christ as your lord and savior
why can’t one just be rewarded for living a good life, and leaving this world a better place than they found it?

Actually . . . Jesus said that even the righteous will inherit the kingdom of heaven. So, define righteous in the 1st C vernacular. You'll never hear a whisper of this from the pulpit during church services.
Live a good life and you're in with the rest of, ahem, them. I feel a sin coming on.

The bible (and religion) is meant to be a look at how to be a moral person and live life taught by the lessons within. Its not meant as a word for word literal truth, and guide to all situations in life.

I think you don’t look at the Bible in it’s entirety but it’s greatest hits.
Not every Petty song was a banger but there’s a lot of good stuff in there.
And then, just like a song, don’t interpret it fully literally. I’m Learning to Fly doesn’t mean Petty is studying to be Superman or Sully, it means he’s trying out heroin.

The last time I went to confession, the priest refused my reconciliation, and forbade me from receiving communion, until I believed in my heart that it IS meant as a word for word literal truth.

The Bible is wild, though.
There’s some goofy shit in it!
Trying to understand it on some actual historical level though, it’s like half the Torah? And half letters about some dude a bunch of people thought was the dude the Torah was written about? Or something.
But it’s all just like, the oral traditions of a bunch of Bronze Age nomads, written decades or centuries after the fact. Jesus spoke Aramaic, the gospels were written in Greek, and now we read it in English.
Ever play the phone game?

Yes.
It’s mostly passed down stories/fables, with some distant truth.
TRob had 36 points, 22 rebounds and didn’t foul Pressey in the battle of 2012.

I thought I saw a halo around Self’s head that night, then realized it was just that gorgeous thick natural head of hair he’s always had, it’s divine.

Which is, of course, ridiculous.
I did do "young life" meetings a couple times in high school. But thats only because there were a couple girls we were chasing that invited us.....and we showed up drunk. Olde English is the blood of christ right? Or do i have that mixed up

Like the one where two drunk daughters rape their besotten dad and the offspring organizes their clan to become one of the largest nationalistic religions in the ANE and becomes prime nemisis of the Israelites? That's a good one . . . and also not heard from any pulpit on a Sunday morning.

Supposedly if you attend Catholic mass every day for - a year? A liturgical year? - or something, you’ll hear every verse in the Bible in its entirety.
Joke’s on them, cuz no one actually pays attention in church. They’re all just sitting there waiting for it to be over so they can go to brunch and be an asshole to some waitress for working on Sunday.

Dude's 60 lbs overweight telling women to control their weight.
