NBA Playoffs
Re: NBA Playoffs
Smart blew this game.
Three turnovers in the last two minutes.

Re: NBA Playoffs
Tatum was running free down the right sideline with his hand up on the last play and Smart didn't pass to him.
Re: NBA Playoffs
Smarts been good for them but it’s well known up here that he’s had issues on and off with Tatum for a while.
Re: NBA Playoffs
Noticed on the replay Tatum was wide open on the far side.
Smart has been huge for them all season, but had some big errors late.
Re: NBA Playoffs
If you’re a head coach in the NBA, don’t play cute ( unless you’re Pop ).
It’s a league of stars.
Get the ball in your star’s hands at the end.

Re: NBA Playoffs
Especially because it's not like Tatum doesn't have a good handle. It's harder when your best player is Embiid who doesn't usually bring the ball up...but Tatum should have gotten it immediately.
Re: NBA Playoffs
Tatum has to go get that inbounds pass instead of running straight sideways, which allowed him to be easily guarded.
Re: NBA Playoffs
Interesting that basically every team left in the playoffs was mostly built and not bought.
Buying teams works for a very short window. Like 1 or 2 years. But it's unsustainable.

Re: NBA Playoffs
Celts/Bucks game was great - despite my not liking the outcome but......3 of the last 4 NBA playoff games were decided by 30 or more points. 30, 35, and 39 points.
Moral of the story is.... Whenever I think the NBA is a good "product", I get a slap in the face reminder it's not.

Re: NBA Playoffs
That's a nice thought, but is it true? I think there's a very fine line between built and bought. Bucks brought in a lot of new guys the last few years. Miami added Lowry and Butler. 4 of Philly's top 6 weren't drafted. Phoenix was getting the #1 pick before Chris Paul got added.BasketballJayhawk wrote: ↑Wed May 11, 2022 9:09 pm Interesting that basically every team left in the playoffs was mostly built and not bought.

Plus, how would you categorize recent champs when it comes to built and bought? Bucks I've mentioned.
Lakers is obvious. Raptors had to go out and add players to get over the hump. Warriors had a lot of their own drafted guys, but I don't think it can be ignored that all 3 Finals MVPs for them were players brought in.
When it comes to being a championship contender, buying is part of the building.
Re: NBA Playoffs
Key pieces drafted by each team:
Bucks: Giannis, Middleton, could add guys like Connaughton
Miami: Bam, Herro, Straus (i think)
Philly: Embiid, Maxey...and Harden wasn't bought (trades are different than dumping players for FA signings).
GS: Steph, Klay, Dray, Poole
Boston: Smart, Tatum, Brown, Williams
Memphis: pretty much everyone except Adams right?
Dallas: Doncic, Brunson
Suns: booker, ayton, cam johnson
I guess my overall point was more that buying up free agents and totally abandoning the future doesn't work for very long. The Lakers are the main team I am thinking of. Brooklyn to an extent.

But the Lakers assembled their team through trades, so which is it? Did they build or buy?BasketballJayhawk wrote: ↑Thu May 12, 2022 11:30 am (trades are different than dumping players for FA signings).

In my opinion the Lakers bought. They traded all their young talent/draft picks away for injury prone AD and aging Westbrook.
The Lakers have almost nobody worth a shit that they drafted.
