The narrative has power unto itself. Regardless of the mix of reasons, staying on despite the failure would be unproductively antagonistic and would give the bad faith Rs an opening.
It is a nigh impossible job and Americans need to understand that. Fighting in Ukraine has unleashed a torrent of remote kill capabilities. Everything from drones dropping grenades to extended range sniper rifles and geolocated small artillery. You can limit but not prevent attacks. And the silly open carry laws and hate groups. This really started with McVeigh.

And of course that causes a negative and reinforcing cycle: it causes fewer things to be done in truly public spaces, which leads to rent-seeking and ideological segregation.

There are some mistakes in some professions that are "live and learn" mistakes and there are some mistakes that are inexcusable. You cannot allow for that to happen on your watch and continue to perform in that role and expect that anyone below you could ever take you seriously again.

A MAGA Facebook friend just posted, “Cheatle just resigned. I would have lost money on that bet.”

Exactly my point. These loons are just ITCHING for things they can pin on the Biden Crime Family.

It was a terrrible location for a rally and they should not have been so permissive allowing them to choose rally venues. He has also exhausted the secret service with an acute need for adulation. And there was the faulty assumption that-mostly--only his people were dangerous led to this breakdown.

I absolutely believe, with my views informed by conversations with a federal law enforcement officer, that part of the problem here is that Trump lives his post-office life in a way that is far more publicly accessible (and INVITES public access) than what the agencies have had to support.

Which is no excuse whatsoever for failing. But it’s a condemnation for failure to plan, not just failure to execute.

Yes. At every one of his “please, tell me how much you love me” events, I squirm at the thought of having to secure the site.

so, roughly 20 minutes passed from the time the Secret Service snipers first saw the shooter, and when he actually opened fire?

20 minutes

seems like more than just the head of the agency needs to go

I’m sure this is just part of a set up for a potential new SS.

Well, they won’t admit defeat, so we’ll see!

I think you typed your response tongue-in-cheek…but either way. The GoP seems to have chess like moves in this regard compared to the Dems Checkers.

Absolutely INSANE to me, even with as normalized as all the insanity now is, that nobody cares about Trump stealing valor by lying about getting shot.

It's easy to say "getting shot at is an assassination attempt, so this is a distinction without a difference."

To which I would respond - if it's a distinction without a difference, then WHY IS HE LYING TO MAKE THE DISTINCTION?

trumpty dumpty's first instinct is to always lie, even when he doesn't need to. It's who he is.

I mean, he's either lying about something very material (and, you know, fundraising off of a lie, which, there is a word for that), OR he is so addled that he truly believes he was shot, despite the fact that it sure seems unlikely that he was shot.

He is so far gone that he likely believes it himself now. A tantrum from a toddler when contradicted
