wtf? how is the turmoil with airlines even a thing? did no one see this coming and do the necessary testing to plan ahead?

i don’t pretend to know much about aviation controls, but it would seem that there is a serious security/safety flaw if the cell network can unintentionally cause problems
My father was a short wave radio geek.
When we were living in suburban Chicago he had a set up in his library in our home and we had two large antennas on our roof that the town had to approve.
Anyways, one night in the mid/late 1970s he had his buddy Kenan Heise (at the time a "writer" for the Chicago Tribune) over at our house - just to hang out. My father was extremely intelligent, knowledgeable, and resourceful. Before you say bullshit based on me - I was adopted.
Anyways, that evening my father was showing Kenan Heise his set up and how he knew some shit in regards to what he listened to. He had a device that interpreted morse code and my father showed that to Kenan Heise but better yet, that night somehow my father "hacked" in to the "radio signal" from Air Force One. They listened to conversations that Jody Powell was having with someone on the ground. My father called me upstairs (where his library was) to listen too.
Kenan Heise was freaking out. Couldn't believe it. If I recall correctly, the next day or the day after that he wrote about it in the Tribune. BAD IDEA (for my father's sake). I don't remember exactly how they reached my father but he was contacted the "authorities" and they asked my father what exactly he heard but better yet, how he could help them in regards to learning how to prevent others from "hacking in" to their "radio signal" on Air Force.

Point of my sharing that was to show how easy it was for someone to "hack in to" something on what you would think would be the most secure airplane - that no one should have ever been able to.
Frankly, I am surprised terrorists don't "hack in to" and fuck up airplane navigational systems more often.

speaking of....can someone explain 5g to me? 4G seems to me to be plenty fast enough to do anything I'd ever need to do on a phone. Why do we need 5g? does it do something else that I dont know about that makes it necessary? or is this a latest a greatest thing to make people think they need new phones or?

Yeah, can't answer your question, but I have 5G through t-mobile and I haven't noticed a difference in data uploads/downloads. I think t-mobile cell service is pretty sketchy. I mean sometimes I can't even listen to pandora while on my treadmill in my basement because it just buffers and this is like 6am when you would think there is not a lot of people streaming. At first I thought it was my Google fiber (which is 1G), but even if I switch my phone off wifi, it still buffers. Fvcking pisses me off. Sometimes it works, other times it just buffers.

Heading into the office this afternoon, I brought a couple of things from home because of winter weather's effect: hand lotion and good kleenexes.

Did a double take and made sure to keep those two items hidden in the bag until inside my office.
