Golf players (and fans) lean toward a certain demographic.

This is not even "karma," just cause and effect.

My home course. Hilarious.

Even better, the city police department put out a statement that said after he punched the guy and took him down, he made him say "uncle" before he got off of him.

Absolutely hilarious.

Illy, who you got for US Open?

Like Morikawa this week. Think he's playing super well right now.

Hard not to like Morikawa on any given week right now. He can win on any course with his game.

As far as betting goes or picking a winner....i have varying amounts of money on Speith Brooks Rahm and Morikawa to win with the most being on Speith (placed early in the year before he won right as he got hot)....then i have handfuls of much smaller bets on guys to win like Finau, Cam Smith, Corey Conners, Marc Leishman, Berger, and Paul Casey.

Most of my pre tournament money goes into DK lineups....my main targets in that are Morikawa Xander and Paul Casey. Speith is 2nd highest salary behind Rahm so i have them sprinkled around, along with some Brooks.

For outright winner bets i tend to make smaller ones pre tourney and then halfway thru or sometime on the weekend i will place a larger bet.

This week it would be easier to pick out who i don't like than it would be who i do like.

I don't like Bryson Rory JT or DJ from that tier of player. None are playing very well, and this course with rough at crazy length is going to be a problem if they aren't hitting fairways and greens....as with any week, those 4 guys are the exact types that can (and do) get hot with 4 days and win out of nowhere. Their talent is elite so they can always win.

My pick is Speith. Only reason is that he is the hottest guy out there over the last 2 or 3 months. This south course (the 1 they play 3 times in the regular season tournament) maybe doesn't set up great for him, but if he can hit fairways his iron game should give him a chance to capitalize on his elite short game.

Next up...

Morikawa: strange a top 5 ranked golfer in the world flies under the radar a little bit, but his game should fit this course. He isn't the longest but that won't kill him here or in a tournament where pars will be good scores on many holes.

Xander: he's fucking due to win 1 of these at some point.

Brooks: missed cut last week. Hurt knee. Not playing particularly well other than a few tournaments this year....but it's a major and until he proves otherwise, most of the time in any major he finds his way near the top. Don't really think he will win, but top 5 or 10 is likely.

Finau: terrible putter and short game (especially under pressure), but his length and ability to hit a shit ton of greens will be a big asset this week. Not to the same extent as Xander, but this guy is going to win eventually. He gives himself too many chances.

Patrick Reed: can't stand the guy, but the harder the course the better for him. And he's won here before. He's been going thru some swing changes this year but has had several top 10s.

Longer shots:

Phil: fuck it why not? Home course.

Paul Casey: haven't checked the odds but I'd take a top 20 bet on him and feel good about it. He has the game to win here, i just don't know if he's a "winner" in a scenario like this will be late sunday if he is in contention.

Marc Leishman: has good history here. If he gets in the hunt sunday he will believe he can win because he's that kind of gritty grinder type of dude.

Corey Conners: having a great year. Tons of top 10s. Accurate driver. Hits tons of greens. He can hang around and win if none of the big dogs run away with it.

Fwiw i have money on Speith and Morikawa both to win the open championship already as well. Very early in the year their odds were more appealing so i put some on each guy to win all 4 majors in 2021.

I didn't mention Rahm, but it's not for a particular reason. I just think with all the stuff going on that i can convince myself of other guys in that top tier over him for this week.

He has great history at this course (courses & city where he got engaged), but bad history in US Opens. He could win. He could miss cut. Just don't know where his head is at. Plus, he was going to win memorial, and going back to back wins is tough. And under these circumstances it is just a tough spot....and yet he's a fairly large vegas favorite last time i looked. So that is interesting.

Can't recall if I've mentioned it here before, but a very odd and specific thing I am passionate about is that the US Open should always, always be on public courses. It's the whole point.

I love it. My goal is to play one of the courses that they've played on recently. Either Bethpage Black, Torrey Pines, Pinehurst No. 2, or Shinnecock Hills.

Wild first day.

Brooks Koepka is unreal in majors. Best sign is that his knee looks better.

Bryson was about as bad as i expected.

Jordan was bad and i should have expected it. He just sprays it a little too much for US Opens. Even at Chambers Bay he sprayed it but their fairways are wide. Hopefully he can shoot a few under in the morning to sneak in the cut line. I expect cut to be +4 or +5, but who knows.

Xander in position again.

Morikawa shocked me, but he does occasionally have these kinds of weeks. He's missed a few cuts this year.

Finau struggled.

Great to see Rory get off to a decent start. Felt like his round could have been 2 or 3 shots better or it could have just as easily been 2 or 3 shots worse.

Rahm not showing any rust and is still vegas favorite after round 1 at +500.

Yea....i agree with you 100% Phil. Fans are fucking the worst part of any sport....particularly golf.

But...dont say you need to deal with it better and then blame it again. Deal with it....you make millions to do so.

I never understand why they say this (cameras making noise) to the media in that fashion. Let your caddie deal with it during the round. Anyone been to a PGA event? It is not perfectly quiet. Shit is happening on 17 other holes. There are cheers. There is noise. There are concession tents, bathrooms, etc. The sound a camera makes on a phone isn't that loud. I like Phil, but this is classic (and it happens to many/most golfers) blaming something else cuz you're playing like shit....for example today i am playing and riding with a dude who i play with a few times a week and is one of my best friends...but he never shuts up. Not on or off the course LOL. I have shot 69s in a cart with him, and i have shot 89s in a cart with him, so it doesn't bother me....well today i am even thru 7 and this fucker is talking to me as i am over my (easy) approach shot after a good drive and i hit a piss poor shot...my immediate reaction in my brain was "my god dude shut the fuck up"....but really I was sort of in between clubs and didn't commit to the shot (or pick the right club). But golfers love to do that. Jab at the green when they miss putts like it was some bump that made them fuck it up LOL..this is just phil doing that, but in whiny spoiled athlete way.

Thomas Detry was one of my main targrts in that lower price range. I like to go with Euros in those spots (at least in a major like this with a huge field and a bunch of unknowns) because they seem to typically be less highly owned...and in those price ranges you're hoping for a made cut and low ownership incase they do something crazy like top 15 it.
