Man, the northern front range (Fort Collins/Greeley area) is wild.
It’ll be some beat up dusty old farm road, lots of potholes, no shoulder, wandering through miles and miles of crop fields and rural high plains, nothing around, seemingly completely remote as fuck, except that it’s also congested bumper-to-bumper traffic.
And the traffic is hardly old farm trucks, it’s late-model Audis and lifted 4x4s, just like you’d see an hour south around Denver, just randomly road raging in the middle of some otherwise sleepy farm road.
Holy suburban sprawl, Batman!

im down to 20 chickens. coyote got 8 this spring. Dog got 1.
I wasn't going to get any chicks this year but my 3 year old wanted them. he named 1 of them Bruno and I'll be damned if that damn chicken doesn't follow him around everywhere he goes. Just hangs out with him its the oddest thing.
Seems they hide a nest somewhere and I end up with a hatch I wasn't planning on at some point in the summer.
I also have ducks again....after vowing to never have ducks again. They are just as messy, stinky, and a general pain in the ass as I remember.

hard pass on ducks, that’s for sure
we’ve been talking about getting chickens, so it wasn’t exactly an impulse thing. got two brahma and two silkies. hopefully they all get along since the brahmas get nearly twice as big
the wife is working on training the dogs. our older heeler is fine and already wants to just mother the chicks. the younger heeler looks like she’s ready for a snack whenever she watches them. they both listen though, so as long as we’re monitoring interactions i’m hopeful we won’t have any dog on chicken crime

Brahmas are awesome.
I lean towards the bigger birds. theyre hardier and I dont put heat lamps out....if they're used to a heat lamp and power fails they usually die. if they have a warm dry coop they can make it thru winter just fine without.
Brahmas, Orpingtons I like best
australorps, sexlinks, Easter Eggers, cinnamon queens, and wyanndottes all do great also.
I know they're fne birds but I'm biased against the Rhode islands reds/whites.

the wife likes the Orpingtons too, but i’m fond of the Polish variety
4 might be our limit, at least right now. we’ve got a full unfinished basement just in case we get a harsh winter, but at the rate things are going even the silkies will be fine outside year-round here

Love that TrumperDub teaches animal cruelty at such a young age!

yea those 30lb kids are just terribly cruel riding those 160-180lb sheep for 3 seconds. They should stick to video games. They might even get some dirt and mud on them. Can't have that.
