Oh, and Texas has no income tax.
Enough to offset the cost of living increase from Lexington to Austin?
Does it really matter if you're making 8-10 million a year?
If you're the kind of person who would make a move like this for money, then yes.
That said, I agree with CnB that this isn't about money.

I don't know that "it" is a rumor. It has been leaked that Texas contacted him. I absolutely believe that is true.
What I am curious about is who leaked it and why?

I’d guess that ATX is also outrageous on property tax right now. That’s if you can find a place that isn’t being used for an Airbnb. Beard’s place might go on the market if the police ever take the tape down.

Has been for years.
The tax thing was mostly a throw-away line I added to bolster the notion that Austin would/could be a lifestyle upgrade (vs. Self to Stillwater). Almost certainly not relevant on its own.

More on topic, a little. There's a chance here, albeit small, because of the parties involved.
A huge hurdle here is money/contract. Texas is one of a few places that can clear that with the stroke of a pen and has the ego to not care about it and do it merely because they can.
Kentucky has done shit like this throughout the history of their program. If someone can clear their money issue, they have the ego to send a good, national champion coach packing expecting they will find better.
I like Cal, always have and always will. But he strikes me as a guy whose ego won't allow him to stick around through tough times at a place that doesn't want him and would take a downgrade in prestige.

I will always maintain I don’t think Cal has ever been a good in game coach but one of the best salesmen in the NCAA.
This got him the best keeds you can get. And he had a great system where he wouldn’t get caught paying them big bucks. But now everyone can do it without fear of getting caught so his advantage isn’t nearly what it used to be.
backtracking a bit, but...
it's oft been posited that Cal is a better recruiter than coach.
it's also been suggested that NIL might create a more even distribution of talent, rather than a more concentrated one.
but, I don't think anyone had "NIL shall be the downfall of Cal" on their bingo cards, did we?

That's not what's happening here.
But, Self is kicking everyone's ass right now. Roster construction/GMing is starting to become pretty important. You have to have a contingency plan for Shaedon Sharpe deciding not to ever play.

well, Cal's contingency plan for Shaedon Sharpe deciding not to play has always been less "build and develop a roster top to bottom from year to year" and more "just throw more Shaedon Sharpe types at the wall and hope they'll stick"
or something. right?
so maybe the question is, why is Cal struggling? Why are UK fans giving him the hot seat treatment? why doesn't he have the luster he did, and getting the classes he got, like a few years back?
what correlation is there between the legitimizing of NIL and Cal just not getting the "twenty-six of the top 25 recruits that all go on to be first round picks" sort of talent that he needs for success? Or is there not a correlation? or is he still getting that sorta talent but something else has changed yet?

Which, ironically, is exactly what fans like you scream for year in and out for Self to do.

There's not a correlation. His recruiting classes started taking a "dip" way before NIL when K took hold of USA basketball and Nike.
Roster management is more important now, partly because of NIL but the other change that never gets mentioned, and I believe is something that Cal is still getting used to, is the transfer rule changes. 4 of Kentucky's 5 starters began their career elsewhere. One of the reasons for that is Kentucky is also losing players to the portal in addition to the draft now. That's not sustainable. You fill in a hole here and there with transfers, but it seems to be better to recruit and develop HS players to be your core.
They need an identity. Their defense is bad right now and their offense is not much better. You can't run dribble-drive to a top level if you don't have guard talent like John Wall and Derrick Rose.
UK fans also need to calm down a little. They should be good this year, so that's unacceptable. But they had good teams in 2016, 2017, 2019, 2020, and 2022.

Probably not. And this isn’t about money, anyway.
Plus high profile people like athletes, coaches, actors, etc. don’t save as much on state income tax as some would believe.
because they're not paying taxes in the first place? sorry, where's the polibored?
