I love how the punchline here is just ENTIRELY out of step with the rest.

"Since the NCAA tournament that still exists today made its first appearance in 1939, other organizations were relied on to name the national champions of the years prior, and thus the Helms Athletic Foundation took initiative with the sole creditor of the champions from 1904 to 1937, awarded to the Jayhawks in 1922 and 1923".https://www.kansan.com/sports/1922-23-t ... 49b43.htmljfish26 wrote: ↑Thu Mar 16, 2023 9:07 amSo you'd feel warm and fuzzy about it if, I don't know, 65 AP writers and 32 coaches had, like, voted on this?
I think it's silly, and small, that we claim the Helms titles. But the logic behind claiming them, and the logic of us treating 2020 the same way as we treat 1922 and 1923, are of a piece.
Exactly.BasketballJayhawk wrote: ↑Thu Mar 16, 2023 9:04 amForgot about that one.
What is the difference between the Helms banners - which reflect the only real outside validation of who was the best team in 1922 and 1923 - and a recognition that...the only real outside validation of who was the best team in 2020, validates Kansas?ramjet wrote: ↑Thu Mar 16, 2023 10:09 am"Since the NCAA tournament that still exists today made its first appearance in 1939, other organizations were relied on to name the national champions of the years prior, and thus the Helms Athletic Foundation took initiative with the sole creditor of the champions from 1904 to 1937, awarded to the Jayhawks in 1922 and 1923".https://www.kansan.com/sports/1922-23-t ... 49b43.htmljfish26 wrote: ↑Thu Mar 16, 2023 9:07 amSo you'd feel warm and fuzzy about it if, I don't know, 65 AP writers and 32 coaches had, like, voted on this?

I think the Helms banners are legit, and I think claiming the title for 2020 is bullshit. My original comment on the kitties was a pimp on all the proclamations that the staties have made and have been ridiculed on these boards and the preceding boards.
I do enjoy your comments, they are entertaining ...jfish26 wrote: ↑Thu Mar 16, 2023 10:45 amWhat is the difference between the Helms banners - which reflect the only real outside validation of who was the best team in 1922 and 1923 - and a recognition that...the only real outside validation of who was the best team in 2020, validates Kansas?ramjet wrote: ↑Thu Mar 16, 2023 10:09 am"Since the NCAA tournament that still exists today made its first appearance in 1939, other organizations were relied on to name the national champions of the years prior, and thus the Helms Athletic Foundation took initiative with the sole creditor of the champions from 1904 to 1937, awarded to the Jayhawks in 1922 and 1923".https://www.kansan.com/sports/1922-23-t ... 49b43.htmljfish26 wrote: ↑Thu Mar 16, 2023 9:07 am

To, again, be clear: I'm not saying we SHOULD do this. I think it's petty and insecure and small.
But it's driving me nuts that anyone thinks there's a difference in the underlying reasoning. There's just not. They would all three be "self-declared" or "mythical" national championships, based on what outsiders declared/voted on.
If you want to say that two zebras are horses, I don't agree with you. Zebras are zebras, and horses are horses. But if two zebras over here are horses, then so's that donkey over there.
So, if not coaching today, what will Self be doing and where? In the locker room watching and texting Norm? What about halftime?NewtonHawk11 wrote: ↑Thu Mar 16, 2023 11:09 amExpected. Won’t be surprised if he’s out this weekend and then next weekend he is back in some capacity.
And the only team that could claim 2020 is Kansas. Otherwise that was an exhibition season. And KU won the exhibition.jfish26 wrote: ↑Wed Mar 15, 2023 7:23 pmAnd...nor was there a post-season tournament in 2019-20.
I truly don't care if we claim, or don't claim, 1922, 1923 or 2020.
All I have said - and it's not really even a question - is that if you DO claim the Helms titles, you should logically ALSO claim the 2020 thing. Whatever it was.
Because it's the same thing, substantially. There is not a meaningful difference to the reasoning of claiming Helms "titles", and claiming whatever 2020 was.
YEA! Let's hang that banner, make t-shirts, have a parade with horses and zebras and donkeys!Sparko wrote: ↑Thu Mar 16, 2023 11:56 amAnd the only team that could claim 2020 is Kansas. It's an interesting conundrum.
