Back to the interesting things in this thread. Turns out everything about the buckeye tree is poisonous from seed to leaf to bark.

So poisonous that ranchers in the east and central US often pay to have the trees eradicated because the nuts (not truly a nut but actually a nut like seed) and the leaves of the tree kill livestock. It kills all living things except ...... squirrels.

Native Americans used this to their advantage by grinding the buckeye into a powder and tossing it into ponds. The poison in the buckeye apparently is strong enough to stun fish and allow for easy harvesting. I guess the fish cant pass on the poison to the end consumer?

Anyway, thought it was interesting.

I wonder why it doesn’t kill squirrels. Maybe cuz of their stomach acid? Cuz like vultures have super corrosive stomach acid that can digest parasites that kill other animals feeding on carrion. In that way vultures are healthy for an ecosystem.

Nobody seems to have a good answer other than nature is a crazy motherfucker. Possums for instance, one of the ugliest creatures around. Slow, ugly, no ability to run or fight. Can eat anything and not get sick, immune to rattlesnake bites and black widow bites. Also wonderfully helpful with appetite for ticks. Nature eh? I still hate them.

Apparently you can eat Buckeyes if you spend days leeching out the toxins.
