Nothin!

I figure the ring will slide onto her finger that much easier once it’s lubed up with a little breadstick butter.

You shouldn't marry within your family.

So got stairs redone - early in the morning before they started, I told them to have the first stair flush with the edge of the door frame at the bottom of the stairs - thinking it'd be understood the edge meant not cutting into the door frame - but stopping before the door frame. Not only did they cut into the door frame, but it also stuck out another 3/4 inch past said door frame, so you'd have the last stair actually very slightly into the door space ( which seems to me like a no no - at most have it flush with the inner edge ).

Spoke with them this morning and they were friendly and open to redoing it - which'll burn them half a day.

Any contractors on here think it was our fault for not exactly drawing out the plan? Or should we feel justified for having them redo their work?

Your request was the only aesthetic part of the job, the rest of the work is Stair Building 100. I am assuming that the nosing on the tread protrudes into the door jamb 1/2" -3/4" to maintain a uniform overhang on the riser? In order to change the bottom tread and stay within code parameters they'll have to rebuild the entire staircase. Four hours to do this? It's like doing the job all over again.

You didn't need to have plans drawn to do this work. I'm thinking it was a breakdown in communication: you wanted the nose of the tread to stop at the door jamb, they understood you to say that the face of the riser will stop at the door jamb. Working out the cost of the revision would be trying to figure out who's fault it was. This is why I annoy my customers and am so pedantic when it comes to a finished product.

There are three of them.
The staircase was not done by any means - they had spent 3 hours demo'ing and then 6 hours building out the frame - and they had another day / day and a half left.

You are correct that the tread protrudes into the door jamb.

Their solution is to cut into the landing.

Their solution will work. It's funny that I had a completely different vision of the configuration of the landings, stair, and doors, than what you've drawn.
