Saying we need to get more from our backup bigman who plays 12 mpg when two starters who play about 30 mpg both shit the bed feels a little like jumping over a dollar to grab a nickel.

Yup.
When Och CB and/or JW have bad games and miss important shots we are usually going to lose. That's okay. Most of the time that won't happen. This team will never be without weaknesses because this roster isn't super talented at every position. There is no amount of lineup shuffling that will hide the fact that we probably only have a few future NBA players on our roster, definitely 1, probably 2, maybe 3 or 4 down the road if Clemence improves....but it's not like some of our most talented teams where there are a handful of NBA players playing minutes....and with this team, maybe the 2 most important spots (PG and C) are filled by guys who aren't future NBA players.
A Dot and Dok duo can get it done even if surrounded by less talented guys because the PG can control the game and the C can change games defensively.
This team mostly only wins offensively. Dave is a good shot blocker when he can stay on the floor though, so hopefully we can see more of that the rest of the year.
