A first grader at my kid's school told another first grader that he had a gun in his backpack. The kid he told came home and told his mom that his classmate said that. My wife is friends with the mom. The mom called the principal, who then called the boys parents. The boy, his parents, and the principal talked. Apparently the kid was very remorseful and his parents were supportive and involved in the process of making sure he knows how serious that is, and there was not actually a gun in his backpack. Hopefully a good learning moment for him. But slightly unnerving to realize that the only reason we even knew about it is because we know the boys mom who turned him in. Otherwise we'd have never known.
do you think the community would’ve been informed had the child actually had a gun?

would the school/district have an obligation, legal or otherwise, to inform parents if there had been a gun (even without incident)?
I'm not sure and I don't know. Smaller school district, and my wife is friends with several teachers and the school nurse, so my gut says we'd find out one way or another if something was ever deemed serious.

This was obviously a 7 year old talking nonsense. And for the record, he didn't say he was going to shoot anyone, he just said he had one. It wasn't said as a threat, but rather he thought it sounded cool I guess.
"Obviously"? Yeah, in hindsight "obviously".

Crazy difference between my generation and this generation.
We had drills in school to teach us how to crawl in to a ball in the hallways by our lockers and kiss our asses goodbye in the event of an "attack" by a foreign enemy.
Now kids are taught how to crawl in to a ball in their classrooms and kiss their asses goodbye in the event of a classmate who was able to bring a gun in to the school.

You parents truly get my sympathy and compassion when I think about how your children and you - have to deal with that.

The hardest part to stomach is how staunchly OPPOSED so much of the country is to doing anything at all about it.

It's on my mind every single school day.

the reality that our elected officials will not/cannot tackle this. is a mindphucqueblower.

It makes me somewhat irrational; it makes me doubt how strongly I feel about the kids being allowed to have phones at school (I don’t like it! At all!) because, on the tiny-but-obviously-real chance there’s an shooting, I want to be able to reach them.

Well, your vote matters more than mine. Put your vote where your mouth is.

there should be a debate/discussion/town hall with all 4 wannabees. where all they debate and discuss is guns in America. no other topic on the agenda.

to me. it is the single most important. and through 2 debates, not one question about guns in America.

While I agree that Harris (as is clear from this discussion) left points on the table on this topic, there is no need for any sort of town hall discussion in order for you to know which side thinks school shootings are “a fact of life” that we need to “get over.”

I don't think very many Republicans feel that way about school shootings.

Obviously, ideas for solutions vary widely, but i think dems and pubs alike want there to be a significant decrease in school shootings.

then why aren’t those people voting accordingly? are kids dying unnecessarily just not enough of a hot-button topic?

I don't have the answers for why more effective steps aren't being taken.

But if we are being honest, I don't think either side has presented enough solutions.

I understand "what" you're saying and why you're saying it. And obviously I align much more with dems on this issue (and many other issues).

Not enough is being done on the gun issue. We definitely agree there.

"More effective steps aren't being taken" because one of our two parties, as a fundamental policy matter, desires to maintain or even enhance the status quo on this issue. And the executive branch cannot do anything itself, because that same party controls the Supreme Court.

And so I strongly disagree with giving any Republican voter one shred of cover on disagreeing with the ticket's view that school shootings are “a fact of life” that we need to “get over.”

If one disagrees with the ticket on this, but supports the ticket anyway, then one is SAYING AT THE BALLOT BOX that whatever goodies they get from a Republican administration are worth tolerating the ticket's (and the party's) unconscionable positions on guns.
