thinking about applying for a job there
cost of living is awesome. Smoky Mountains and associated wildlife is a huge draw. <200K population is also a bonus
I imagine the reptilian live is more abundant and diverse in the southern applachias....
But, man, the east, particularly southeast cant compare with the natural wonders in Utah and within a days drive of Utah. A days drive from Salt Lake you can be in about any natural environment you want, in the middle of nothing, huge mountains, lakes, rivers....Utah is right in the middle of a lot of awesomeness. Salt Lake kinda sucks....but...yknow.
i don’t disagree, but…
drought + water mismanagement by the state is making for a difficult situation to where the Great Salt Lake is in a dire situation. ecological collapse and severe environmental tragedy in the form of toxic dust clouds is a very real possibility in the next few years (the toxic dust is already happening)
honestly, i’ve been looking at the pacific northwest too

somebody tell me about Knoxville
It's been awhile, but I was there for a couple of weeks for work with free evenings. Not a huge fan, might not be too bad for a night or two. There's a decent walkable downtown/entertainment/bars area, check that out.
Outside of that, I found it a little . . . southern rough, if you know what I mean. Not really my scene. Lexington is way better. Nature stuff isn't my thing, so can't help there.
the wife and i just spent a week in a town of less than 2K…absolutely loved it
we’re getting to the point where a slower, simpler way of life is calling louder and louder

And I say, you do you!
edit: also, I just assumed you were asking for tourism purposes. There many times over more livable places than there are "visit-able" places.

there’s a bumper sticker going around that says something to the effect of:
Utah sucks - don’t move here
as far as natural beauty goes, it probably doesn’t have an equal given the diversity of landscapes
people have, and continue to, ruin it. maybe i’m being too pessimistic/apocalyptic in my thinking, but i just don’t see enough being done to solve the problems at hand. from praying for relief, to planning a pipeline to the pacific…there’s just a whole lot of foolishness being tossed around while the problem only gets worse

Tennessee doesn't have an income tax, but it has one of the highest sales taxes.

Didn’t know Utah was coastal.

Utah is incredibly beautiful. So are the smokies. Both states have their own brand of religious nutcases.

If it’s just natural diversity, I think Cali has that pretty easily.

cali has the coast but utah’s deserts are far superior, imo
but yes, cali definitely has the greater overall diversity

I convinced my mom to buy me the Dangerous Minds soundtrack on cassette (parental advisory) by having her listen to Gangsta's Paradise on the radio. Simply iconic.
