To be honest, I don't listen to podcasts let alone 27 minute long ones. If the same information was provided in written form, it would cut out the extra junk and take 5 minutes to read. I just don't have 27 minutes to give to the topic.

No worries, being willfully ignorant is pretty much the theme of this thread.

Everyone has preferences in how they best learn information. Being willfully ignorant is to me, the decision to choose not to seek out information on a topic at all despite its availability. I don't classify preferring and utilizing one method of learning over another as willful ignorance especially since these conversations that we are having are typically a secondary focus while we are at work.

I guarantee you make enough money to buy instead of rent. Just maybe need to be more realistic about what is affordable.

That's why a national minimum wage doesn't make sense. You probably can't even get a vacant lot in some place for 25k.

In central IL you can get 25k houses that are livable. You can get 10k houses that would be livable with 5k worth of work. You're in the hood sort of, but it is what it is. Not everyone can live in a gated community on a golf course. I certainly don't.

There a decent little starter home neighborhoods in my city that are 50k-ish.

I live in Springfield IL. It is hardly bumfuck.

In bumfuck IL you can get even more for your money.

I live in a resort market though. It’s overwhelmingly second homes.

So it’s difficult to find a single family home for under a mil here any more. Winter Park used to be the anti-Vail, but now it’s just Vail 2.0.

I’m competing with Texans who can afford to drop 7 figures on their vacation spot. They used to only be up here for 2 weeks a year, but now they’re up here for 2 weeks plus rent it out on Airbnb the rest of the year.

I could maybe get like a small condo, but then I’m also looking at like $500 a month in HOA fees

The key is to always buy the house you can afford at the time.

First couple of years of our marriage we rented. Saved money. Then we bought our first house. A starter home. A home we could afford. 10 years later we sold it for greater than 2 times what we paid for it.

With those proceeds we again buy the home we can afford. I remember going to the bank to get pre-approved and they pre-approve us for an amount at least twice what we set our budget at. We purchased our second home armed with a fat down payment and money do whatever improvements necessary. We still live in this house. It is almost paid off.

Do it smart and it is a beautiful thing.

The key is to buy the house you can afford at the time.

Fraser isnt cheap.

You shouldn't be looking at properties that are competing with those types of buyers imo. It's not those people's fault you can't buy a house.

There are townhouses and condos in Granby for under 225k.


Also, maybe your situation is where renting makes more sense....or you could move to a place with more affordable cost of living and higher paying jobs (relative to cost of living).

Or you could blame others for your situation.

Breaking news... not every working wage is enough to buy a home. To me, "minimum wage" is enough to live minimally. Minimal living to me is low rent apartments. Anyone who thinks you should be able to buy a small home, have two cars, cable, a cell phone and everything else the Middle Income America has while making minimum wage is foolish.

It's not shaming or blaming poor people to acknowledge that their income level is not enough to do certain things. It's just math. But "living within your means" is a challenge for many at every income level, especially in this day and age of social media.

An entry level McDonalds worker should be able to afford to live. They shouldn’t live as well as someone making 5x as much as them.

Your economic theories just don't make sense. If everyone's pay goes up 25%, but costs of goods goes up 25% too then no progress has been made.

Who is arguing that everyone's pay increase by 25%?

Nobody. The idea works with whichever % you choose.

Taking a $10/hr worker to $12.50 is a 25% bump and that's not crazy.

Well, particularly with McDonald’s (eg a giant global corporation and not just some mom and pop), the question is one of wealth distribution.

Perhaps an entry level worker could have a better chance of buying a home if they were paid more of a living wage, rather than having their wages suppressed for the benefit of shareholder dividends?

That’s the thing about Merica - we’d collectively rather tell workers they don’t deserve to buy property, so that we can let shareholders afford million dollar vacation homes instead.
