Again, if these rumors are true and guys are actually interested in this job beyond a pay bump there is ZERO excuse for you to not go and get Leipold as 1 or Monken as 2 and a distant 3 would be Fritz. This would be such a KU move if they let Jones play out the '21 season.

'Crootin' is one thing but actual results on the field are another. Coaching, how you develop the guys you have and most importantly how take what you have and make it successful is what I'm looking for. KSU and ISU should be KU's barometers for a rebuild because neither one of them have traditionally recruited well. Hell, even in our dumpster fire years KU would have recruiting classes that ranked higher than both of those schools and we still got taken to the woodshed.

Pick between Emmett Jones and Willie Fritz for 2021.

Not an easy one.

Do I have to? If Goff can't get a deal done with either Leipold or Monken then his tenure isn't getting off to a great start.

If I had to choose I would go with Fritz but retain Jones as a potential replacement.

Leipold
Monken
Jones
Fritz

In that order

I again think this is all premised on Leipold or Monken actually wanting the job, which we don't really know. Goff is also a guy with zero experience hiring a football coach and no obvious ties to any football coach candidate. So I don't really know where the bar is on this hire.

But, the "do I have to" is kind of the point. Having an interim season might feel like kicking the can down the road, but if the guy we want isn't biting because spring ball has started, then an interim year is better to me than Fritz.

It just seems like you are majorly contradicting yourself here being OK with Fritz. On one hand, you are so doom and gloom about the program you want it canceled, but then turn around and say it is in so much better shape now than in the past. But, then we are OK with Fritz who is 61 years old and has wanted the job for decades but we have never felt was a viable candidate for this level of ball. Is the job really better now if Fritz is our guy?

One thing that Goff mentioned in his press conference today is how closely he did work with the football program and Pat Fitzgerald in particular at Northwestern. So he's never been an AD before. He's never hired a football coach before. Surely he's learned something from his experience at NU, right? I mean, KU could (and most definitely has) do a heck of a lot worse than the new AD potentially saying, ok I'm going to get me a football coach in the mold of Pat Fitzgerald.

Kevin Kane it is!

But, seriously, I think Goff will do fine on the hire a lot because the options are rather narrow. When a MAC coach is a homerun, the number 2 or 3 option isn't that hard of a sell to me. Just do a thorough search and find your guy.

From what I have read and told Goff was hired because of his plan for football and priority 1 should be hiring a football coach. Typically ADs are measured on their coaching hires thus the reason why Long isn't here anymore.

Goff, is walking on a razor edge right now. He has to know that Jones can't be the answer as the HC but knows that if he moves to quickly and completely disregards the personal equity that Jones has built up he will have a full scale football mutiny on his hands. This is a good roster and that shouldn't be taken lightly.

I go with Fritz because he has experience. Jones, as good as he is simply doesn't. We tried the young coach who can recruit and is relatable to the players. It didn't work and I have a feeling donors feel the same way. Cancelling the program was facetious, I think, lol but I will say undoubtedly that this program is in a better place vision and support staff wise post Miles than it was pre. KU, wanted to compete at a P5 level but treated the program like it was a D2. I've first hand seen the improvements and others have discussed it as well. This administration is fully behind building up this program.

Again, we have tried absolutely everything. It is no longer disqualifying. We are like the Detroit Lions where we only prove that we can kill anyone's career.

Goff intro presser today.

The guy is personable and direct. Hopefully he does well for Kansas. He won’t make any snarky comments about $4.99 a month I’d guess.

I share this now knowing full well of Stricker's popularity around these parts. But his track record of accuracy made this feel worth passing along.

Perhaps this is a more important angle to the Monken talk.

Not excited about Monken.

Just let Emmett Jones coach next season, the players love him; let's see what he can do.

It would be just like KU to give the job to Monken and then watch Jones go off and be a successful head coach somewhere else.

Definitely something to be said about someone who WANTS to be here as opposed to just taking the job. We've shied away from the guys who wanted to come and failed with the guys we've hired instead.

Ya know who else the players loved in an interim title? Clint Bowen.

Get a proven guy who can coach competitively against and beat some of the best schools in CFB. Monken has done that. Multiple times.

On the other hand, people raved about how well prepared Beaty was for the interview.

Yeah, I'm not worried at all about Jones being successful elsewhere if you don't go with him. There are a lot of good reasons to think Jones is not a good candidate right now.

And, saying that, I would not be that excited with Monken, but I get it.

Here’s the biggest thing KU needs right now. A talent developer, a proven leader and a face of the program. I think Monken checks all those boxes.

He takes 2 star guys to Norman and pushes an Oklahoma team quarterbacked by Kyler Murray who played in the playoff to a close game that went to OT.

He is a leader of future US Army generals and leaders.

He speaks with a firm confidence and the ability to connect with fans and players.
