Gonna get dicey...political figures need to tread lightly on this one while standing up for the cop. If not, could have a real situation with people vs all cops. Not going to be able to perform their duties if they are scared to take appropriate steps. This is not the same as the others as pdub has already addressed.

I think you could fire 1 shot, wait 1-2 seconds to see if that effectively de-escalates(i.e. person drops to ground). If not, fire more rounds then.

Yes, ideally that.
But the adrenaline and sudden need to take action in the moment is a factor even for the well trained.
( jeep could speak to this best )

When one citizen is lining up and taking aim to stab another citizen, you shoot them. if you have the opportunity.

Works great in CoD but good grief. The person is attacking someone with a knife. Not just threatening them from a position where an attack isn't likely but actually attacking them. I think we're just making something out of this because it was a teenage girl involved and because of the tension surrounding any African American who is shot by any police officer for any reason. I don't see this as another case of clear police overstep. Could maybe some procedures be changed? Maybe, but the officer successfully prevented an armed attacker from hurting a civilian.

And this is absolutely 100% accurate.

Yeah, sure, but it still just feels weird to say “I successfully protected lives by blasting a 16yo in the back...”

Not if that 16YO is getting ready to stab a citizen.

It's also weird that a 16yo was attacking two other girls with a knife despite an officer with a weapon drawn was ordering her to stop and drop the weapon yet here we are.

Yep, thats the oddest part of all of it. Not sure what some want the officer to do? Yell more and watch someone get stabbed?

what are the odds she stops in her tracks if he fires a round into the ground?

The punishment for trying to stab someone shouldn’t be execution.

I think it’s fair to expect trained police officers to be able to fire a round, wait 1-2 seconds and then reassess.

Sorry that you think that’s only possible in a video game.

Probably lower than the odds of that shot hitting an innocent bystander on a ricochet as well as the odds that the officer would be fired for such a reckless decision.

"Oops, looks like that didn't work and she proceeded to stab the victim in the face. Guess I better try again".

Yeah, go sell that procedure to the family of the person stabbed.

Now we're just complaining about the police because they're "The Man". This competition to think up the most granular non-lethal reaction, regardless of the potentially disastrous failure points, is getting dumb.
