Then do something to change your situation. Start a new business. Run for public office. Save up money for a few months, move to central IL where recreational use land isn't crazy expensive, buy 20 acres near a water source (for fish and water), get a tent (until you can build a log cabin from the trees), plant a garden, and live off the land. Do some service or create some good to generate $500ish a year for property taxes. Remove yourself from the system you hate so much.

People lived without electricity, messageboards, and greedy employers for thousands of years. You can too. Especially with the supplies you've already amased.

Does everyone have the same skin in the game?
He seems to give no value to "skin in the game".
Consider me among those who view capitalism (and its values of infinite consumption and nonstop expansion and profits-or-bust mentality) to be overwhelmingly responsible for climate change.

What can you truly accomplish with a half eaten bag of Funyuns and some squeeze cheese?

He has clothes/blankets, fishing gear, and cooking supplies. That's a good start to living off the grid.

huh? I dunno, why don't you check under your bed and ask him.

I haven't paid much attention to the stock market. And if illy's unsolicited advice in the shooting thread is any indication, I don't understand it well. Never said I did.

At the very least though, I always found it curious how the stock market is sometimes used as some indicator for the health of the overall economy, and sometimes not. And it always struck me as surprisingly close to gambling, despite being such a legitimate economic whatever otherwise.

for roughly half of the US, the stock market means jack shit

talk about propaganda

edit: that comment is based only on the proportion of ‘muricans that own stock

add to that people like me, who own stock but don’t set their hair on fire with every dip in the market

even worse than that. for far less than half of the population student loan debt means jack $#!t.

talk about propaganda.

edit: that comment is based only on the proportion of Americans that have student loan debt.

add to that people like me that had student loan debt but worked hard to pay it off without the help of my government.

i don’t necessarily disagree

my point was that for more than half of this country, market swings do little to impact how they live their daily lives

true. short term drops are inconsequential and the daily media coverage of them is little more the fear tactics. But the longer term trends are more telling and more impactful to the country as a whole.

we'll see where this current trend is headed but its starting to show signs of being concerning.

As I said in a different thread, it's a great time to invest if you have some money to invest and can wait out this dip. Lower stock prices mean higher profits once you sell them down the line. I can't retire for 15 more years so we are definitely pulling a little extra from savings accounts and buying up some stocks that are at relatively depressed levels.
