jmo, but college ball WON’T be demonstrably less exciting to watch/follow if a dozen or so kids get drafted right outta high school
and i doubt its even a dozen in most years

I think college basketball is better for having had the surefire top-5 guys coming through, but it will survive the loss.
What I'm not so sure about is whether college basketball would stay at least as relevant and as popular as it is if there was a legit and commonplace alternative for kids ranked 6-50 to go instead of college ball.

The G League sure is trying that. Paying guys $40K minimum or whatever for 5 months to play there.
But they'll have to up it to compete with the TV exposure that college ball brings.

What’ll be interesting is if/when some Zion type goes g-league, if/to what degree the media hype machine follows.

40k is less than what many are getting paid to go to college....so that's an issue with G League too. The brands are paying them more to go to college because of exposure.
I think if Zion had gone G League that all of his games would've been put on TV...but it's going to take someone like him to start the trend. Brandon Jennings or whoever isn't going to cut it.

No one cares about the G League and no one ever will. Why would they?

Why would anyone care about Zion in the G-League when they could be watching Embiid in the real league?
The level of skill is lower (hence the former "developmental" name), and there is no real loyalty to the team, save a handful of hometown fans.
Why bother?

exactly
when i see the lines of guys in the g-league i have to remind myself that, rather than being a step below the league, it's more like AAU on roids

I think the hypothesis is, the media hype will follow to the talent, more so than follow the college game in itself.
Bear in mind, college teams are similar to g-league teams in that there is no real loyalty to the team, save a handful of alumni fans.
Okay, and an even smaller handful of non-alumni fans, like Illy

Who is to say that Zion would dominate the G league?

Did he really dominate college ball, or did espn just convince us he did?

Colleges have huge built in, existing, fanbases. The G league will never be able to compete with that.

Well, that’s another part of the equation:
to what degree will a college team loose its fanbase if the talent pool is diminished?

It’s similar to like an MLB franchise. You’ll never lose the diehards.
Franchises still fail, though, for not thinking forward enough.

Well, no.
Although, I'm not arguing against DC's overall point about the G-League, but, this point assumes that there is equal coverage of high school basketball/prospects to that of high school baseball/prospects, which is of course not true.

If the entire talent pool is diminished I would argue it would have little effect.
And for the fans that are watching KU because there are more Andrew Wiggins's than Perry Ellis's, byeeeeeee.
