probably because he gets his hands on multiple Navalny sympathizers, who will most likely all be dead within a matter of weeks, as well as some Russian spies. As a former KGB Intelligence officer, I'd bet Putin has a soft spot for spies and wanted to get them back.

Artem Dultsev (age unknown)

Artem Dultsev is a Russian spy who was living undercover in Slovenia, posing as an IT businessman named Ludvig Gish.
He pleaded guilty to espionage at a court in Ljubljana on Wednesday and was sentenced to more than a year and half in prison. According to a statement from the court, he was set to be deported to Russia and was banned from entering Slovenia for five years.
Anna Dultseva (age unknown)

Based solely on the reporting to date, I suspect the answer is different - I think Putin knew that the US didn't have what Putin wanted, and that Trump would not be able to broker the deal with the other heads-of-state that were involved.
