Before he bot and ran the Grand Emporium at 39th & Main in KC, Roger Neighbor promoted music shows, usually but not always blues bands. He would often book the groups into the Lone Star Bar in Westport on weeknights, as the group was crossing the US on it way somewhere else for the upcoming weekend. One Saturday afternoon in '83 shortly after I moved to KC, Los Lobos was on its way from somewhere to Omaha that night, and Neighbor took a chance that even tho the gig would start at 1:00 on a Saturday afternoon, Los Lobos would attract a crowd. And boy, did it ever. The place was packed, the dance floor was hopin', and it was one of the best live shows I ever saw, or got the opportunity to dance to.

I would usually get to the U early on Saturday mornings and get an empty classroom to hole up in and be there until about 10 pm studying, but I made an exception that Saturday, and I've never regretted it.

(I gave up front row balcony seats to see Springsteen in '84 at Kemper Arena because I had a Microbiology final the next morning. I totally bombed the test anyway, and I've always regretted that I never got to see The Boss live.)

I am of a mixed mind on the longshoreman’s union strike.

I support legally-protected collective bargaining as a means of seeking level playing fields between management and labor (especially as to matters like compensation, working hours and benefits, and working conditions).

However, my understanding (which is incomplete - I’m happy to be better-educated on this) is that one of the two major issues is the specter of job loss caused by automation.

To me, so long as we are not compromising worker and public safety, it is not good for the economy broadly to shackle innovation and efficiency (that benefits all) for the sake of protecting a couple thousand jobs.

Instead of entrenchment and protectionism, I’d rather see our government and the industry support robust training and creation of new employment opportunities.

I grew up in a longshoring community. We are talking hard working, highly skilled people, who deserve great jobs. I just think we can preserve them AND improve (through innovation) port safety and efficiency.
