At what point do we suggest that maybe this whole religious child abuse problem is not a bug, but a feature?

Meh. Pervs come in all shapes and sizes.

For real though, name one other institution that could get accused of this volume of abuse (hundreds of thousands of allegations in France alone), and get away with it.
I mean if the boy scouts can be held accountable, why not the church?

Pedophilia isn't unique to religious groups. But it is absolutely a problem within the Catholic Church.
I didn't shrug anything off. You're the one who said it's a "feature not a bug", which is the comment i disagreed with.
Who is "getting away with it"? There are plenty within catholic churches who have absolutely not gotten away with it.
The problem, aside from the sexual abuse, is that they (those within the Catholic Church) consistently try to cover it up....we agree there.
And fwiw, i am not religious or Catholic.

Not sure how to translate the word "Meh" into anything other than a shrug off but OK. 300,000+ victims of abuse at the hands of 3,000+ priests. Sorry but it has proven out hundreds of thousands of times that having private, trusted access to children seems to be an appealing feature of being a priest for people who have a predilection for sexually abusing children. I see it as no different than the fact that being a law enforcement officer seems to be an appealing choice to some who like the opportunity to physically abuse people that they feel are inferior to them.

Again, the "meh" was in response to the "feature not a bug" comment and nothing else.

I am assuming we're just misunderstanding each other because i can't imagine sexual abuse of children is something we disagree on.

Yes, it’s absolutely a problem within the Catholic Church. And no it’s not unique to religious groups, but what is unique is that they seem to skirt accountability for it, much more so than any other institution would if they were accused of as much.
And forgive me if I interpreted your “meh” as shrugging it off.
If this widespread trend of abusive behavior is NOT a feature, then why doesn’t the church just promptly refer every allegation to prosecutors?
From the article:
The figure includes abuses committed by some 3,000 priests and other people involved in the church — wrongdoing that Catholic authorities covered up over decades in a “systemic manner,” according to the president of the commission that issued the report…
The independent commission urged the church to take strong action, denouncing “faults” and “silence.”…
He denounced the coverups that permitted “mass crimes for decades.”…
Savignac assailed the church for treating such cases as individual anomalies instead of as a collective horror…
Sauvé denounced the church’s attitude until the beginning of the 2000s as “a deep, cruel indifference toward victims.”…
“Sometimes church officials did not denounce (sex abuses) and even exposed children to risks by putting them in contact with predators,”…
Pope Francis issued in May 2019 a groundbreaking new church law requiring all Catholic priests and nuns around the world to report clergy sexual abuse and cover-ups by their superiors to church authorities
does that not sound systemic? As in, their system seems more designed to perpetuate the abuse, more so than weed it out.
Why doesn’t the church adopt a policy of simply reporting each allegation to law enforement, rather than their own authorities?
And how much do you mean by “plenty?” Cuz for every church official who has not gotten away with it, there seems to be plenty of outstanding accusations otherwise…the article mentions a couple priests that faced consequences, but also some 3000 allegations outstanding

I do think that there is a link in the Catholic church between men who swear off sex ( more specifically men who swear off sex with women ) and then, eventually, abuse young children ( more specifically, young males - over 80% abused were male ).

Ugh.
Yea.
And you’d think that any institution with half a shred of dignity would want to do away with that link in a big hurry.
But despite the overwhelming allegations, said institution still tries to treat it as individual anamolies.
And you’d think even if the allegations themselves aren’t somehow damning enough, then the response might be enough to prompt some critical mass of public outrage, yet here we have illy still trying to meh it away.
Perhaps the wildest part is the reaction of the sheep. They clutch pearls about condoms and abortion and their bullshit purity culture, yet somehow still don’t think twice about leaving their kids alone with a priest.

Unfortunately sexual abuse, rape, etc is something that many people get away with. I suppose it is because it is very hard to prove in court? Especially years after the fact. Not sure.
But I absolutely agree the Catholic Church has systemic issues surrounding sexual abuse due to (as you mentioned) their repeated attempts to cover it up or ignore it.

Why not just like, subpoena the fuck outta the whole goddamn church.
Shed light on it!
I’m sure there’s some Bible verse that would fit well here, but it’s not like the church gives any fucks about what Jesus had to say.

And as I stated, it seems pretty obvious that easier access to children to abuse does seem to be a feature of being a priest that draws some pedophiles to it as their "calling".

Without being more familiar off the top of my head, how does the church abuse scandal compare and contrast with other abuse scandals?
Larry Nassar, and the boy scouts, and such.
And besides the fact the church’s scandal is much much bigger than either of those.

Compare in what way? Nothing compares to the catholic diocese across the US actively conspired together to move abusive priests throughout the nation to avoid bad publicity and arrests, many times offering hush money to the families of victims and allowing the predator priests to continue to abuse children for decades. The size, scope and duration of it make it most likely the largest organized sexual predator ring in US history.

Well, compare, and contrast.
Cuz all those are comparable in that they systemically enabled predators.
But they contrast in that the church’s abuse is far bigger and more widespread, the church has more money than both of those other entities combined; and in terms of legal and public consequences, the church has faced hardly any.
