I feel Cal is overrated and isn't a fantastic in game coach (despite him being good enough to get to 6 Final Fours) but it seems some of you may be forgetting his accomplishments with UMass.
He was good enough to get fricking UMass to the Elite 8/Final 4 in back to back years.
He was good enough get Memphis to the Elite 8/Final Four/National Championship game in back to back to back years.
He was good enough to get Kentucky to the Elite 8/Final Four/National Championship game in back to back to back years.

You gotta give Cal credit for his 90s runs. No doubt there. Maybe he could coach back then.
Memphis he had a collection of NBA players including probably the best player in college - though, alas, that National Champ appearance didn't count.
We've already talked about Kentucky.

Like many coaches, he is good when things go fine and the chemistry of the players on the roster is good. He also had several key multiyear vets on the teams that went deep in the tourney. Where he goes sideways is when his talent doesn't gel on it's own and he has to try to generate some chemistry and he also suffers when what little experience he has doesn't turn out to be a key contributor.
But more and more, he has been less concerned with chemistry and experience and more concerned with amassing future NBA talent.

Sometimes teams gel and sometimes they just don't. Some coaches have the ability to help that along and others unintentionally make it more difficult. Cal's comments can rub people the wrong way if they aren't already team player guys so I wonder if he just has a few guys who aren't bought into his shtick this season.
I have seen Cal coached teams be nasty on defense before but this year's team is just soft and off kilter. They have a lot of length relative to their positions like nearly all Cal teams do but they just aren't a menace with their length like many of his previous teams are.
Who knows. I hope they lose every game.

Petro said it right yesterday: when you look at the rosters, there's really no reason we should be a 1-seed and UK should be a bubble team.
Not sure it's even possible to appreciate Bill until he's gone, but the whole all-peak-no-valley thing is quite a trick.

Does he still tho?
I mean haven’t most coaches adopted the windbreaker and gym shoes look now instead?
Maybe that’s his problem.

Cal with our roster would be 9-7 including a Champ Classic L, an opening Battle 4 Atlantis NC State L, a trashing at MIZZOU, along with home looses to Indiana, Oklahoma State and Oklahoma.
MJ Rice would be openly talking transfer and there'd be a few on the court fights between Jalen and McCullar.

Shit is starting to melt down in Lexington. Apparently, Calipari raised $30 million, mostly from former players in the NBA, for a practice facility but their AD would not approve the project moving forward. Also leaked that scouting of games is mostly done by an assistant video coordinator as well as a grad assistant vs. being done by the assistant coaches or Cal. The poop flinging has begun.

"Harris's dribble drive isn't up to standard. I mean, I try not to ride the kids, but I promised Gradey's parents he'd get open shots. And I told Jalen and Kevin they have to develop a way to get off more shots. The kids just aren't ready. Except for Zuby. He is ahead of schedule."

Waldo wasn't this lost. During Tuesday's 71-68 home loss to South Carolina -- the same South Carolina team that lost to George Washington by 24 points earlier this season -- a Kentucky fan was removed after he displayed a "Please Go to Texas" sign aimed at John Calipari. The quick response from the building's security staff was the most aggressive defense Rupp Arena had seen in weeks.

Kentucky was so close to blowing this. 8 point lead with 2.5 minutes left cut to 2. But Tennessee missed about 100 layups.
