Late in the day on June 1, demonstrators gathered near the White House, on the edge of Lafayette Square, to protest police abuse following the death in custody of Minneapolis resident George Floyd. Similar protests had erupted across the country. Many were peaceful, but some included property destruction and clashes with police.

Earlier in the day, President Trump berated local and state leaders as “weak” for not doing more to quell unrest, and in a call with governors he pledged decisive action. “We’re going to do something that people haven’t seen before,” he said, “but you got to have total domination, and then you have to put them in jail.”

At about 6:30 p.m., just north of the White House, federal police in riot gear fired gas canisters and used grenades containing rubber pellets to scatter largely peaceful demonstrators. Their actions cleared the way for the president, surrounded by the nation’s top law enforcement and military leaders, to walk to the historic St. John’s Church for a three-minute photo op.

Drawing on footage captured from dozens of cameras, as well as police radio communications and other records, The Washington Post reconstructed the events of this latest remarkable hour of Trump’s presidency, including of the roles of the agencies involved and the tactics and weaponry they used.

On June 8, however, two law enforcement agencies confirmed to the Star Tribune that they had punctured the tires: the Minnesota State Patrol and the Anoka County Sheriff’s Department. Department of Public Safety spokesman Bruce Gordon, whose department oversees the State Patrol, confirmed to the Star Tribune that troopers cut tires in “a few locations”:

“State Patrol troopers strategically deflated tires … in order to stop behaviors such as vehicles driving dangerously and at high speeds in and around protesters and law enforcement,” Gordon said.

Gordon said the patrol also targeted vehicles “that contained items used to cause harm during violent protests” such as rocks, concrete and sticks.

“While not a typical tactic, vehicles were being used as dangerous weapons and inhibited our ability to clear areas and keep areas safe where violent protests were occurring,” he said. … Deputies from Anoka County followed state orders and joined the patrol and also cut the tires on vehicles on Washington Avenue, said Anoka County Sheriff’s Lt. Andy Knotz.

Just more evidence that the police can make up any story they want to get away with abusing their power and get away with it, even when they are caught on video breaking the law. That's simply spiteful vandalism.

Interesting reads about the Camden Police Department, who went through a dramatic restructuring and redesign 7 years ago. Obviously every city is different but their efforts seem to have had positive results so far. Curious to see how many more cities begin to look at similar efforts.

Isn't that what this has been about?

* What? Seems if anything, he was maybe "scanning" their Identification. Nice of our President and conspiracy folks to give good old Martin a lot of credit - for out-smarting law enforcement.
I suppose Trump is too clueless to realize his claim reflects poorly on law enforcement.

Bottom line is Trump admits he was "pushed".
The man's head hit the sidewalk. You can clearly hear it - or something else hitting the sidewalk. If it wasn't his head, what was it? I highly doubt Gugino wanted his skull to smash against the ground. He could have died.
I don't know what was in Gugino's hand but it looks like a phone. Perhaps he was using his phone to "scan". I can't prove he wasn't but why is our President accusing him of something that hasn't been proven? Yes, it could have been a set up. I could be a Russian spy. I wonder if Trump saw a video of me and listened to a OAN reporter - if he would think I'm one. Why wouldn't he?

This was good and Lopez was 100% on point. I don't dislike her but I will say fuck her in the handling, or I should say mishandling, of the crisis.



Transcript: When downtown is in lockdown, our neighborhoods are next, and our failure to fully get ready for what’s going on in the neighborhoods, we’re seeing this destruction, and we’re thinking that it’s going to somehow end tonight. We have seen where, in other cities, this has gone on for days; and we need to come up with a better plan for days, at least for the next five days, to try and stabilize our communities,” Lopez said.

The aldermen said parts of the Back of the Yards and Brighton Park neighborhoods in his ward had become “a virtual warzone."

"We can’t expect our police, and I don’t fault them at all, to be able to control this," he said. "Half our neighborhoods are already obliterated. It’s too late."

Lopez said he feared looters would eventually start targeting homes after ransacking businesses throughout the city.

“Once they’re done looting and rioting and whatever’s going to happen tonight, God help us, what happens when they start going after residents? Going into the neighborhoods? Once they start trying to break down people’s doors, if they think they’ve got something,” he said.

“We know that people are here to antagonize and incite, and you’ve got them all pumped tonight, today. They’re not going to go to bed at 8 o’clock. They’re going to turn their focus on the neighborhoods. I’ve got gang-bangers with AK-47s walking around right now, just waiting to settle some scores. What are we going to do, and what do we tell residents, other than good faith people stand up? It’s not going to be enough,” Lopez added.

When Lopez finished talking on the conference call, Lightfoot declined to respond, and tried to move on to another alderman, but Lopez demanded an answer.

“It’s not something you ignore. This is a question that I have,” Lopez said.

That’s when the call turned profane.

“I think you’re 100% full of s***, is what I think,” Lightfoot said.

Lopez was infuriated.

"F*** you, then. Who are you to tell me I’m full of s***?” he said. “Maybe you should come out and see what’s going on."

The mayor vehemently denied protecting downtown at the expense of the neighborhoods.

"If you think we’re not ready, and we stood by and let the neighborhoods go up, there’s nothing intelligent that I could say to you,” she said. “That is the stupidest thing I have ever heard. I understand you want to preen."

"Mayor, you need to check your f***ing attitude. That’s what you need to do," Lopez shot back.

At that point, several other aldermen interjected in an effort to calm nerves, with one alderman telling Lopez, "Ray, cut it out, please. Calm down, please."
