So it’s difficult to find a single family home for under a mil here any more. Winter Park used to be the anti-Vail, but now it’s just Vail 2.0.

I’m competing with Texans who can afford to drop 7 figures on their vacation spot. They used to only be up here for 2 weeks a year, but now they’re up here for 2 weeks plus rent it out on Airbnb the rest of the year.

I could maybe get like a small condo, but then I’m also looking at like $500 a month in HOA fees
Full time residents are definitely getting squeezed out in CO vacation markets. There simply isn't as much available to full time residents like there was in the days before vrbo, airbnb, etc... Many investors are finding that they make far more money on a house if they rent it out to vacationers a handful of times a year than if they rent it all yea long to a resident. And the impact of reduced immigration has hit the CO home building market hard. There just aren't enough workers to make it an affordable venture to build lower priced homes.
A hot topic of discussion here is on local housing issues.

Local gummints are trying to build local housing, impose taxes short term rentals to pay for it, etc.

But there’s all these folks like THIS WOULDNT BE A PROBLEM IF WE’D JUST LET THE FREE MARKET WORK ITS WONDERS

And it’s like, actually no, the free market is precisely what created this housing crisis.
It's the free market that's the problem?

Or a tourist area growing faster than it can keep up with?

Not necessarily buy a home.

But I DO believe, rather strongly, that anyone willing to work full time in Merica should not have to still live in poverty.

That's what I have a problem with even more than a low starting wage. The expectation among those who defend lower starting wages is that you get raises and promotions. If you aren't giving those, than I can't really defend lower wages. And, I'm not sure how you address that problem, other than people leaving shitty jobs for better ones.
Good post comrade, but it stands to upset the temporarily embarrassed millionaires here.
Instead of understanding his post and thinking about it in relation to some of your ridiculous statements you'd rather go for the attempted edgy witty comedy routine. Shocker.

How or why does someone’s only employment opportunity end up being McDonald’s?

How can such a big successful corporation’s business model depend so heavily on not paying living wages?
"How or why does someone’s only employment opportunity end up being McDonald’s?"

The list of reasons are too long to even begin to list. Some are through no fault of one's own and others aren't. I empathize for those whose lives play out in a way where that is their only avenue to generate income.

"How can such a big successful corporation’s business model depend so heavily on not paying living wages?"

Many American consumers like "cheap and fast" options. That business model can only be maintained by keep expenses down. If they raise their prices to $10 a burger so that their burger flippers can buy a small house then the people who like "cheap and fast" are now just getting "fast and crappy" and could get better food for the same price point. Then McDonald's goes out of business vs. being a global corporation.

Those are one in the same?

It’s rich folks buying up properties just to flip, or just to make money on Airbnb.

Then, when they’re up here, they’re the same tourists who through a tantrum about waiting in line so long for a Big Mac cuz y’all’s McDonald’s is short staffed

That isn't realistic. The economic impact to you and I and everyone else for that to be realistic would be staggering.

And what do you consider poverty?

And at what point does that person living in poverty have some personal responsibility for their choices? Never?

I agree, full time workers should not have to live in poverty....but minimum wage full time workers also aren't going to have enough money for some of the things everyone thinks they're entitled to.

The hospitality and food service industries typically allow workers to see a higher percentage of the worst of people than is actually the case in day to day life. They are hard industries to make a long term living in because the rudeness of people wears on you over time and they are hard communities to live in because of it. It's no wonder that they have a higher turnover than the working population in general. In all honesty, dealing with asshole vacationers and the overall inflated costs are the only things keeping me from relocating full time back to CO in 10 years when my last kid finishes high school.

It depends. How much additional revenue is generated by a person with three years of experience flipping burgers over one that just got hired a few days ago? Are you going to pay a guy with 25 years of experience $25 more to cut your lawn than a guy with 2 years of experience? I'm not.

Like I said, entry level jobs aren't designed to be careers. They are to be short term entries into the job market where you gain experience and then move on to bigger, better jobs.

You seem to wish that there was no such thing as a bottom to the class system. No matter how you stack things or how much you paid for those things, there is always a bottom to the stack.

I think the whole talking point of “flipping burgers is easy” is too bad.

In itself, it’s not real hard to learn the skill.

But to learn it, and be good at it, and be willing to put up with it in the high pressure sweat shop conditions that are encountered in that sorta workplace, I don’t think there’s an executive in the world who could finish a shift.

And re: “how much revenue is generated,” shouldn’t that be more of an indicator of wages than just declaring “but yer job is easy?”

Reality show idea: make a CEO and an entry level worker switch positions for a season.

Why shouldn’t the revenue you generate be a factor in the wages you earn?

You're missing the most important part of his comment...which is experience vs no experience.

Also, since we've picked on McDonalds they appear to have a decent strategy of promoting from within for shift managers store managers etc. And their pay seems very reasonable (only looked up my area).

That's plain old BS and I think you probably know it.

Do you believe there's a burger flipper in the world who could successfully complete a day in the world of an executive? No. I could train a teenager in one day how to do more than 50% of the tasks needed to be a burger flipper. Could I train a teenager in one day how to do 50% of the work necessary to be an executive? Please.
