I'm just more disappointed than upset.
For how good Bill has been in end game scenarios for YEARS, last night was not a good night. And it wasn't even like kstate ran the best defense or has the best defenders out there. All year he has relied on a Juan and KJ end game screen and something to come of that. But man, when Wilson was on a heater, as he was last night, you just give it to him and let him go to work. No matter how it gets done. And someone mentioned it here, but if I'm Wilson, I am LIVID with how that played out with him not getting a SINGLE TOUCH on the final possession of regulation or OT.
We see them again in 2 weeks and I bet it's a different story. 5 of next 6 are against top 20 teams. Let your nuts hang, Hawks.
We were looking to get the ball to Jalen on the reversals. They were way overplaying him. I don't think Bill lets it get to that point next time. Just give him the ball on the first pass and let him try and win the game. It was kind of similar to taking that timeout. Let him play. Bill almost never calls that timeout. Was weird seeing him overthink things.
To be fair, saw a screenshot this morning of Bill calling a timeout before Yes even passes Wilson the ball. The ref just never heard him.
Still seems out of character a little, but that's better.

Dajuan only takes wide open shots, and his recent hot streak may be an outlier (that'd be great if it isn't tho)
Yes is pretty explicitly a shooting guard, right? as in, (in the absence of pg play, or of D, or even of getting to the rim) checks in pretty purposefully to shoot.
what's the volume argument factoring playing time? Dajuan has made 4 more 3 pointers than Yesufu on one more attempt
despite playing nearly 3 times the minutes. There may be factors of confidence/short leash effect there too.
and not that I don't like Dajuan, and not that I don't appreciate everything he does do!
JFC you're bad at this.
And only show up to talk hoops after a loss. So transparent.
please chill. Please!
I'm begging you.
please dude. What'll it take?
can we please not argue about absolutely everything?
what can I do?
what can you do?
what'll it take?
Please?
You can stop ONLY coming to the hoops board to trash our players you don't like.
You stay on the "i need help with all things life and hate my job" thread and the "i am an expert on war" thread, and we won't have any problems.
"Please chill"
LOL
Pussy.

yea, I don't recall Self taking that late-in-the shot-clock kinda timeout often.
and it'd be one thing if it got us some slick play for an easy bucket, but...maybe we don't have much of the playbook installed yet, I guess.

I think partly why Self called the timeout is because we had 3 bench players in. That had to play a factor.
LOL @ "playbook installed".
File that under the "tell me you don't watch basketball without telling me you don't watch basketball" tab.

McCullar in conference play so far:
33% FG, 26% 3FG, 7 PPG, 2 APG, 2.3 TO/PG.

If you suck in practice, and then also suck in the games when you're given a chance, why would you be given more chances on a top 5 team in the country?
You can’t pout your way through shitty depth.
The job is getting guys, coaching guys and playing guys. Part of the job is taking the guys you got, and coaching them into guys you play.
We have 0.8 reliable bigs on this team, and it’s January 18. That’s on Bill.

Having almost zero bench options at the 5 is on the staff, though, and holding this team back. For now, it's still early.
We've labored on offense a lot during league play. Those are the times when Bill almost always draws something up for a favorable matchup on a reversal for our 5 on the block. Obviously for DMac the last 2 seasons.
This year, that seems to be the PnR with DH/KJ, but DH has to be much more consistent on scoring at the rim and in the midrange with the floater. If he's not going to be a threat there, he and the team are too easy to guard, like last night. Kansas State did not think for one second that Dajuan was a scoring threat in the last possessions. Kills the strategy. We're fortunate KJ is playing like such a stud.

minus the losing part, it was a very entertaining game. that game had it all.

I think it was also that kansas state did not think for one second that anyone besides Wilson was a scoring threat in the last possessions.
Pettiford? Nope.
Yesufu? Nah.
Clemence? Lol.
Harris? Maybe?
They read that last play well - three defenders swarmed to Harris - leaving Yesufu completely wide open ( along with everyone else but Wilson who I think they were going to try and get the ball to in the paint ).
Harris needs KJ. KJ needs Harris. They are a helluva duo. And were carving up ksu before KJ got called for standing.
KU needs those 4 guys out there to score.
McCullar is there for defense.

My take on last night's game. We went on the road against a rival top 15 team. They came out full of energy (like it was their superbowl) hit their first 5 threes and built and early lead. The hawks had one of their worst shooting nights of the season, started both halves poorly, had 3 starters foul out, and STILL ALMOST WON

There was a lot to feel good about coming out of that game. Ku is clearly a lot better than k state, and they are a good team. Hawks by 20+ in Lawrence

Recruiting matters. These are good recruits we are talking about, but not elite recruits. Gradey Dick may very well be our only long term NBA player on this team.
It's possible that Zuby Udeh and MJ simply aren't capable of playing at this level for a contender yet.
Just like you can't pout your way through depth issues, you also can't wish your way through them either. And playing them just to play them and hoping they magically improve is just that, wishing. Self watches them play A LOT of basketball. I am confident we don't have contributors on the bench that Self is holding back to the detriment of our team.

This.
That is why I think we are the best TEAM in CBB. Especially in close games. But we need our main 5 out there to be that. We can't do it with 7-9 on the court. They aren't good enough.

You have to use what you have, and if you have nothing, that's still on the staff.
We're the top college basketball program in the entire world at present.

I didn't feel good at all about it going to OT.
But another reason why we should have gotten a damn shot at the end of regulation.

Sorry, not buying this.
At a program like ours, PARTICULARLY in a transfer portal world, getting to January 18 with 0.8 reliable bigs is a recruiting/development failure, not a personnel failure.
A Bill failure, not a Zach/Zuby/Ernest/Cam failure.

I agree.
...but we've been unable to recruit like the top program for a bit. It changed a bit this year with Gradey MJ and Udeh. Next year that changes for good I think. We get major upgrades at guard positions.
I think Clemence and one of the littles will move on. MJ will be ready by then, it seems like he's close. Hopefully we keep McCullar. Another 1 seed.

Honest question - why do we think MJ is "close?" We literally haven't seen him hardly at all for weeks.
He has played...19 minutes since December 1.
