Just like that Vernon delivers with some notes.

Monken putting together a detailed plan. He won't call plays, hence the Triple Option not being really in play. He'll focus on being a CEO and focus on culture of program.

Many believe Monken will run a modern offense, but focus on physicality and be very run-oriented. (My thought) Think of Fritz's offense and even to an extent Oklahoma. You wouldn't think it but Oklahoma is like a 60/40 run/pass split offense. But a spread offense that focuses on power runs, counters, options and some RPO concepts.

Thoughts are he would bring his own DC, but make an OC hire outside of his circle.

There's a reason his contract doesn't have a buyout for Kansas. Not specified though.

Seems like Monken is trending upwards. Fritz is trending downwards. Seems like Leipold and Monken are the 2 external guys KU is targeting.

I think I want Monken. I was on team Leipold, but I like the CEO aspect of Monken. Les was supposed to be that, but leaked into play calling too much. Beaty couldn't bear to sit back, same with Weis and Gill was just over his head while trying to be a CEO. We need a CEO like Mangino. Just watch over EVERYTHING and make the best choice for the team, not just for the offense or defense.

the no buyout-KU thing seems odd, but i’m far from “in the know” about these sorts of things

My guess is that it is a mix of things but mostly "Pick 4-5 P5 schools that are crappy that will hire you and they won't have to pay us" Your new school will have to pay us that is not on the list.

Basically it would be a "You wanna go to KU? Good luck!"

I'm with Newton on this. I was all aboard team Leipold but Monken is sounding more and more appealing. Monken sounds like he would bring a certain toughness, discpline and nasty to this program that we haven't had since Mangino.

I will say the CEO part kinda scares me when you compare it to the Mangino era. There were a lot of things going on behind the scenes during the end of the Mangino era that led to his unpleasant ending and they mostly centered around egos and power trips. Not saying that would happen with Monken but something to consider.

Either way, at this point if Goff is unable to close the deal with either Leipold or Monken that will be a huge failure in my eyes.

Fresh off the presses from Goff to WEF:

“...I want you to be amongst the first to know that we are launching a national search to find the next head football coach for the University of Kansas. I met with Coach Jones today, as well as the coaching staff and our student-athletes to inform them of this decision. I have emphasized to that group how thankful I am for their leadership and commitment during this challenging time. Coach Jones has done an outstanding job in this interim role and will be a candidate in this process.”

Yeah he’s hiring externally. Which is ultimately the smart move for the longevity of the program. Still think Jones is part of program in the future.

I think Monken is choice 1 IMO

I like Goff meeting with the team before it went public. As far as his decision goes it is the right one. Goff got hired and is being paid the big bucks to do the right thing not the popular one.
I’m sure those players are emotional and upset but they will get over it. I’ve always said you don’t fall in love with the back up QB and the interim HC.

I wouldn’t mind keeping Eargle, Jones, Chevis and Drake.

I was in favor of letting the dust settle and seeing what Jones could do in 2021. That said, we REALLY can’t afford to fuck this up again. We need a proven guy.

My feelings on the coaching search have basically settled on a coin flip between Leipold and Monken. I'll be fired up for either one. One day I think I like Monken a little better, the next day it flips. Whoever can put together the best plan and impress Goff with it, I'm cool with.

It seems like Fritz's name is cooling fast. That's fine with me. Also really not impressed with the Eastern Michigan guy. And I don't want the Georgia DC. We need a proven winner and leader, not a first-time head coach.

You lock either Monken or Leipold in the room. Give them a blank check and ask them what is the amount it takes for either of you to be the next HC at KU. Done.

If Goff gets either one of those hires done....

I'll renew my season tickets.

Agree with everything you said here. I think Fritz is out of the picture from everything I've read and heard. It is a coin flip between Monken and Leipold from what it seems. I'd be fine with either one.

And I'm truly back and forth. Still think I'm team Monken but just barely. Would love either guy honestly.

If I were Leipold, my number would not go below 8 figures a year.

To take on this job, absolutely and if I was KU I wouldn't blink an eye at making that happen.

We are all going to find out how serious donors are about turning this program around because some pocket books are going to need to be opened up not only to get a HC but the assistants that come with them.

are you guys serious about 8 figures?

there’s obviously other incentives, but Saban is just shy if $10mil/year in base salary

https://sports.usatoday.com/ncaa/salaries/

Riley (OU) - $6.2
Patterson (TCU) - $6.1
Herman (UT) - $5.8
Gundy (OSU) - $4.1
Campbell (ISU) - $3.4

MILES - $3.3

Brown (WVU) - $2.9
Wells (tech) - $2.8
Klieman (KSU) - $2.3

for reference:

Liepold - $5.01
Monken (holy shit) - $929K
