Two nights ago. Stabbing at the beach basically across the street from me. Shooting by Northwestern Hospital 2 blocks from me.
This morning... 1:45 am. LOUD construction(?) noises woke me up. Drilling and banging. Couldn't tell if it was on my floor or the apartment above me. Perhaps a maintenance emergency? Seemed to be both above me and down the hall. Well, it was both. Construction(?) above me and some assholes on my floor going in and out of an apartment basically slamming the door.
I fell back asleep around 2:30am.
3:50am. My phone rings and wakes me up. It's the person at the front desk calling. I ask what's up. She asks me what the problem is. I ask what problem. She again asks me what the problem is. I was unsure if she was referencing the construction(?) noise and/or the door/s slamming - so I asked her. She didn't answer but she did ask me what apartment I am in. I told her and she said - "wrong number". I asked her "wrong number" as in apartment number or phone number? She said, "bof". Silence. No apology. I hung up.
Sounds exactly like what I have always assumed living in a high rise building downtown in one of the largest cities in the country would be like.

Storms woke me up this morning. It's so quiet here that you notice when it's not. And I have a neighbor who for some reason thinks it's OK to pipe easy listening jazz to an outdoor speaker in their backyard. Not loud, but loud enough that you notice it when you're in the back yard. That's the extent of my issues in the suburbs (outside of the murder a few weeks ago). But I don't have any pro sports nearby and very few of the big city shows and concerts come here so there's things you get that I don't. Life is full of give and take, I suppose.

Yes, definitely pros and cons to most living situations.
In an ideal world (for me), I would have two modest homes and be retired. Neither would be in "downtown" Chicago - as much as I like Chicago 4-5 months of the year - when I can avoid the crime.

When I was a child and young adult I figured at my current age (56) I would be married with kids and living in the suburb/s of Chicago.
I'm not married.
I have no kids.
I'm not living in the suburb/s.

Please give us an update, after the rigors begin.

I never sleep past 6, either. If I get > 5 hours of sleep, it's a "good" night's sleep. 6 hours is a rarity. And because of that, it does me no good to go to bed "early". If I go to bed at 9, chances are I'll be up ~ 2am.
No thank you.

Since you asked.

I am impressed 99. I sometimes miss several hours of sleep during the work week and will sleep too much on weekends. But I think everyone has a basic amount of REM sleep needed. My sleep debt is probably massive.

Anyone else ever have a front tooth drilled? WTF? I am having it done in about 2 hours. My concern is the ALLEGED cavity is too close to my gum and she's (the Dentist) going to have to cut away at the gum.
I guess it could be worse. Maybe.

Thanks! I'm thinking I might rather get butt fucked by Shaq with no lube.

I survived just fine. The dental procedure, not being butt fucked by Shaq. In case you might have been confused.

On another note.....

As someone who struggles with depression, at times it makes me feel like I almost shouldn't enjoy some of the things I do.
To clarify, I enjoyed last Thursday and Friday immensely. I was in my "element". Outdoors, live music festival, taking photos (I enjoy photography), meeting new and interesting people, etc., etc., etc. Saturday and Sunday were ok but Thursday and Friday were great days. Possibly/probably 2 of the 10 best days I have had in 2023.
I am looking at my pics and short videos from Lollapalooza and it somewhat bums me out as I am sitting on my rooftop on a gorgeous (weather wise) afternoon knowing in a couple of months it's all down hill in regards to outdoor enjoyment and the weather.
Moral of the story for me has to be.... BE IN THE NOW. Not the past, not the future.
That and God willing Gutter needs to find and do enjoyable things more often - and move to a climate where he can enjoy the weather all year round.

Thanks for my 2 minute psychotherapy session! Check is in the mail.

My oldest daughter is moving out of Chicago in a couple of months. We have deep family roots up there so I have visited the city a lot over the years. I love the place. Chicago is where I learned to love architecture and time spent there as a kid was one of the determinants for my future career.

May daughter wants me to come up and spend one last weekend before she leaves in the city. We will have a meal at Miller's Pub, cuz it is a decades old family hangout. We will go to Millennium Park to see the orchestra play. I was one of the principal engineers on the Pritzker Pavilion bandshell so it is a career milestone for me, my mark on the Chicago landscape. We will probably spend some time in the Art Institute and maybe go check out Nick Cave's Facility. I need to get a poppy seed cake also.

My daughter had talked about moving back to Denver. I figured when she moved on from Chicago that is where she would end up. But she decided she is moving to San Francisco instead. She was there as a kid when I had a project out there and has gone back visiting college friends. She loves the place. I asked her "why not Denver?". Her response surprised me. She told me that she wants to live "someplace more diverse". She thinks Denver is too monoculture. She can practically be in 5 different countries over the course of a weekend in Chicago. She loves the weather and the mountains in CO, but she needs that diversity of culture to feed her soul.

You might love Santa Fe NM for the weather, Gutter. It is damn near perfect all year round. I love Colorado Springs for that reason as well. Even in the dead of winter I can get outside and hike. But there are only a few cities in the world with the culture of Chicago. You might miss that more than you do "good" weather.

We all gotta pick our poison. Very few places have everything.

I like spending the bulk of my time in a place that is quieter and easier to live than the big cities. But I can get on a plane and spend a week in Chicago or Los Angeles or New York City when I "need" it. I like the sensory overload of those places, the cultural attractions and the people. I find it rejuvenating in short bursts.

My daughter wants that stuff every day. And she can come to Colorado and get her fix of quiet empty mountains and desert when she needs it.

It's all about figuring out what makes you tick. And realizing that may change over time. And moving sucks and it's expensive. So choose wisely.

Santa Fe is one of my favorite cities, if for no other reason than the food

A+ post. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Good luck to your daughter and it's nice she can and will move to where she wants to be - and where she thinks she'll be happy.

I'm not ready to leave Chicago just yet. When I retire I might like to "keep" a place in Chicago if I can afford to do as such. As my buddy and I briefly discussed on Sunday, I will want to be out on the west coast the majority of time. Problem for me is my balance issues. Can't drive in the mountains and I like to move around and explore so it will be a hindrance.
Anyways, walking around this past weekend reminded me there are 8 billion DIFFERENT people on this planet. Each one with a different set of thoughts and what is and isn't important to them. Yet, every single one of the 150,000 to 400,000 people I saw over the weekend shared something in common with everyone that was there. They enjoy/ed something (live music - a music festival). There is/was something that gave them pleasure (live music - a music festival). So they went and did it. Good for them!
No matter what it is that makes me happy - I need to just do it. Talking about it does me little good.
