I'm a terrible player. I've gotten better but I'm awful at it. I always feel like I'm behind and need to be accomplishing something. My kids do lots of chores and tasks with me. I'm still working on playing just for the sake of playing. It's/I'm a work in progress on that front.

in my defense...my dad, and grandfather's were also terrible players. I grew up thinking chores and building things was our bonding time. I'm thankful for that now though.

No doubt.
For me, now that the kid can communicate and has a personality, the wins/gains are higher than the losses and it wasn't like that earlier ( people/parents are probably told not to say this kind of stuff but I think that's silly if you don't feel that way ).

It's like a favorite sports team -- first couple years ( again for me ) there was a lot of loosing but you still love them and support them. Recently my team has been picking up some big wins and when they f up, it's still frustrating, but you're like, yea but how about that OT victory in the Super Bowl?
The first few years are so hard. For so many reasons.

And, to acknowledge it, typically WAY harder for the mom than the dad. It took my wife a few years with both kids to say she felt fully back to herself again.

Now we are in the super fun stage. 7 and 10 years old. My daughter will enter the tough phase in a few years.

I find myself thinking - ALL of the time - about how I often feel like I'm not spending enough time with my kids.

But then I catch myself and realize that, from/after Covid (and with me working from home more days than not), I see my kids like 600% more than I did before Covid (and a similar extent more than my friends whose parents had jobs like mine saw their parents, when we were growing up).

The whole thing is a bitch - you always feel like you're not doing enough, but all you CAN do is what you can do.

There were a lot of awful things that occurred due to covid (death, lost jobs, etc), but one of the parts I'll remember most is the time home with my wife and kids. One of the happiest and scariest times of my life so far.

And now it's somewhat transformed the working world for a lot of us. I'm in the office only a few days a week. I am capable and efficient at working from home. And now I get the best of both worlds. Never have to miss kid shit. But can also still earn the money I need to earn to live the way I want to live (and I don't need much, my wife and I are both not overly motivated by money).

oh for sure.

I see my and I'm with my kids a lot. More than I was with my parents at their age and much more than 85% of my friends were with there's. (there's a social component here to, both with it being the 80s and we can ran Feral half the time....and me living rurally where there aren't neighbor kids for mine to just wander over to their houses etc).

My issue is I feel like I should spend more of my time with them doing....kid things, Legos and games and sprinklers etc...but often I do that for a bit then my head starts swirling with the vast amount of things on my to do list that half to be done before winter or whatever....and they end up wandering along with me as I build kennels or fix sprinklers and on and on

Same boat.

My youngest is also - and please, absolutely DO be sure you're sitting down - highly literate, literal and process-oriented.

Which makes her very good at a lot of things, but - and again, keep your arms and legs inside the vehicle at all times here - something of a pain in the ass.

Went to an apple orchard this morning for a field trip.
Lady who owned orchard had a 30 minute preso about the orchard.
For 3-4 year olds.

15 minutes in kids are yelling out, 'I want to pick apples'.
25 minutes in one kid gave up and started throwing apples at her.
I was dying inside keeping the laughter in.

If a particular joke - really, a dad joke at this point - didn't come to mind, I'll be very disappointed. Especially given, hint hint, your geography and, HINT HINT HINT, your rooting interests.

The Gutter in me says that we are raising a generation of ingrates.
The 99 in me says that the owner-lady is trying to massage her own ego over the kids
enjoyment and they would have had a much better experience (and liked her more) if she had pared down the presentation to 5 to 10 minutes.

I chuckled when I read it.

my son had his first ever soccer game this weekend.

It's been a battle trying to get him to participate in practice and focus on anything....he claims to hate soccer, only likes basketball and track and wants to switch to flag football next year when he's old enough.

to my surprise...he Allen Iversoned it and turned it on for game time. played hard, focused...was aggressive. and scored a hat trick.

now he likes soccer and next practice he was focused and participated fully...lol kids....

that's it. that's the whole story. thanks for listening.

Cool, both of my kids played soccer. Oldest one liked it a little, youngest one hated it. Watching your kids play and grow is pretty gawdamm special.

Yay! Great story. Hat trick*!? ____in' A!

I've attended a lot of soccer games in my role as a grandfather, and never have either of my granddaughters been considerate enough to score a hat trick.

*You should have had him fake an injury after the 2nd goal, and not return to the game in order to avoid setting the bar impossibly high for himself, in the future.

Love it.
I can't get minibud to be into soccer yet...don't want to force it on her.
In my mind she'd already be dribbling, shooting and juggling by now but obviously was not realistic.
