It looked like there were layers to the set. Landen is right, here.

Self going to have to do a lot for Ochai to get him the ball. Book might be out. Just put a guard on him and face guard him all game.
Makes it even worse for us because it’s now 3 on 4 with Harris out there.
Reminder that we went 16-25 in the 2nd half.
We didn’t rebound or keep Allen off the elbow. Free throws too…

Dave was our 2nd leading scorer tonight.
He was doing well in the interior.
I'm fine with him getting the ball when hes having a good game.
I am too. Just not as option 1 2 or 3 on a final possession of a 1 possession game.

Of course I'd rather Ochai but if he cant get open, good Dave is a solid option in a one point ball game.

Banked 3 saved the game for Texas. Had some big performances/plays from players we absolutely need in March (Dave and Jalen). Harris is what he is and will be our undoing eventually, hopefully not until the F4.
Harris was really good until that last play. Was terrific on Carr and made big shots
He had a few awful passes to no one in particular that have to stop.
He had 6 assists and just two turnovers in 38 minutes while being the only primary ball handler for 27 of those minutes.

Complaining about Harris in this game is weird. Who cares that they played off him. He was efficient, had a three to one assist to turnover ratio, and ran the offense well enough that we shot frickin 58% from the field. We're not in that game without Harris's playing both ends.

Self has kind of gotten eh in late game situations. No go-to play that always works. That wasn’t much action on that last play tonight.
There is no such thing as a play that always works. But. Dajuan harris isn't exactly a lethal playmaker that you can just put the ball in his hands

Perfect analogy. Juan, would be great in a 15 minute total range but the 30 minutes he gets exposed.
Why in the world did Self take out Yes when he was playing his best game of the year. Yes, is an elite athlete who at least defenses have to respect.
Everyone starting to realize what I've been saying all season

Self needs to stop having Harris initiate the play in those late game OOT plays. Inbound it to Wilson and clear the fuck out of the lane.

I'm not even convinced Dave was trying to set a screen on that last play. He wasn't really close to touching him. It looks like he was faking the screen to try to surprise his guy on the seal the other way.
I defer to Lucas on this stuff tho obviously.

Self was right that they were going to overplay Ochai.
I'm ok with the play being for Dave.
He had some good finishes tonight and it was a one point game.
and it sure looked to me like he was open…DH just made a bad decision

There was definitely time to back it out and at least somewhat reset and get the ball to someone else.

Dave was definitely trying to set a screen.
He points to Ochai to get to his spot.
Then he hugs his arm in so that he wouldn't be called for a bullshit foul.
Ramey just gets around it and caresses Ochai the entire way.
Harris had Dave at his spot. If the play was for him, he coulda gotten it to him.
Jalen was also available around the wing/corner.

that bottom left image is exactly what i was referring to
how does he not make that pass?

Yup.
Get it to Dave there and Wilson is waiting if they collapse.
Instead Harris crosses back into traffic.
Also kinda shitty is that once Ochai gets up to the 3 point line and Ramey is still on him, without about 12 seconds left, he doesn't try anything else to free himself up. I get that you're creating space but I think you should have something better planned for Ochai if he doesn't get free from the screen the first time.

Because the original play was not designed for Dave (as it should not have been).
Both Dave and Harris driving were backup plans and Harris obviously saw something that made him feel like the defense would collapse and he'd have a kickout or dump off.
The play design was poor and the execution was poorer.
We need to do something better than throw the ball all the way out to Harris in the backcourt and have Och come get a handoff. We do it too much. Especially when Ramey is overplaying the hell out of Och.

"Well, we were trying to get the ball to David. I just drew something up and it obviously wasn't very good to get the ball to David. We knew they'd overplay [Ochai Agbaji] and [Dajuan Harris] saw a crease and drove it back the other direction, which he's made plenty of those shots. And the ball just slipped out of his hand. We shouldn't have been in that position but obviously, we didn't execute very good coming out of that timeout. So that's on me."
"I don't know that Chris drew up a play to bank in a 3. If he did. he's a hell of a basketball coach. But [Tre Mitchell] was open and I think that was the play. I think he drew that up to get Mitchell a shot because David was guarding him. So he banks in a 3 while we're up four and we still had a chance. Ochai, I don't know if you guys noticed, David's wide open off the lob and Ochai throws it off the rim...They go 20-23 [from the free throw line] and we miss what, three in a row. So that was a big difference as well."

Watched the replay of that play about 15x right now. There are layers to the play, and Harris gives up on getting the ball to Och too early. He saw the overplay and went to Dave, and gave up on that early. Dave had OK position on his man, but was pushed too far up to the FT line. But it looked better than what Harris had, unless he thought he could get CB the corner three.
I didn't think last night that Harris should shoulder a lot of the blame for that play (Bill should), but yikes, on replay that was a really bad play for Harris. And I suspect that is partly why Bill tried to insulate him by taking the blame on the play.
