i’m not so sure he knows
he continues to tout recruiting and draft success, and seems to just hope that wins follow
I think it's also fair to question whether what we're seeing is a loss of
program-based competitive edge in this new world; in a world inching its way toward direct-pay, I don't think it would be surprising to see the bluebloods' inherent institutional advantages being somewhat weakened (the barriers to competition for talent being lower).
And that's to say nothing of another question that is fair to ask - are
shoe companies losing their edge now that players can be paid above the table?
Well see. If Nike and Adidas lose a chunk of market share to some smaller companies who can now get into scooping up younger players now that the barrier of needing an established network of runners and high school AAU programs to get to these young players has been eliminated then the answer is yes.

If I am getting 750k a year to play a college sport I wouldn't give a shit about the dorms because I'd be renting a sweet ass house anyway.
Yep. And if I'm spending $750k on a player, I wouldn't ALSO give money for new dorms. Two sides of the same coin.
except what’s stopping schools with the money from doing both?
it would seem short-sighted and a bit naive to think the level of “spend” we’re seeing now being anything close to where this might end up going

I tend to think of this stuff from a macro standpoint. At some point revenue and expense need to balance. Obviously part of the task is to grow the revenue (the pie) so that each piece is bigger. There are only so many ways to do that that do not involve diverting general funds.
To me, there is very clearly room on the expense side for coach, administrator and other “white collar” type compensation to be reduced.
If this is going to look more and more like pro sports…go find me a pro sport where a head coach or GM makes more than the entire roster combined.
I want to pause to add - there are reasonable “blech” reactions to all of this. Not intending to say any of this is good or bad. But it’s what it is, and this is the direction.

You writing the checks? If not, what do you care if a guy is getting $500 from Pyramid or $500,000 from Pizza Hut?

i don't have to be writing the checks to be curious. i don't have to be writing the checks to have thoughts. i don't have to be writing the checks to have an opinion.
i don't have to be writing the checks to have an opinion on how the lions spend. do you have to be writing the checks to have your opinions on the chiefs.

If and when there is a cap (or something along those lines, where what one player gets matters), I’ll care. But that’s not the case, at least at the moment.
What do you care, for example, what the Lions’ assistant coaches make?

Indeed! Boo Buie was brutal the last 4 minutes of regulation. Team had onions in OT.

Buie's shot clock beater in OT was chef's kiss.

Yeah, who knows if the techniques he is yelling about are truly the right call in those situations but there seemed to be a lot of situations where UK just didn't know how to handle screens and left far too much space. They have been giving up tons of points all season, even if they managed to outscore their opponent.
