I don't know why they can't keep the name but re-brand the mascot to the convenience store clerk from the Simpsons.

Mellinger tweeted that he always thought the unacceptableness went like this:

1. Washington Football Team old nickname

big gap

2. Cleveland Indians
3. Chiefs/Braves

I agree and think it stops at #2. #3 seem fine to stay with some tweaks to stop promoting old fan traditions.

The iconography matters. WFT and Cleveland were indeed a big gap beyond Chiefs/Braves (and Seminoles/Blackhawks and a slew of other college programs).

and, the chiefs have actually tried to right this “wrong” and reached out to local tribes for their input

high schools here in SLC have started doing this as well

Which you have to do. Chiefs are fine after some tweaks. Just need to stop playing the song. Braves do too, if they still are.

The nickname, though, I'm having a hard time coming up with why Chiefs isn't ok. And, supposedly Braves did not originate from Native American references.

I'm not personally offended by anything the Chiefs or Braves do, but I'm also a white dude.

I'm a Chiefs fan and want them to stay Chiefs. If that means sacrificing the chop and the drum at the Altar of Wokeness, ok.

I’m fine with dropping the Chiefs. I think most mascots are dumb anyway.

I saw some suggestion of Pioneers (as if that's not moving the wrong direction vis a vis respecting Native Americans).

is it “wokeness” to be culturally sensitive?

or, is it really just being courteous and respectful?

Yes?

My comment was tongue-in-cheek, but obviously there's a subjective determination to be made on these sorts of things. I don't personally think the right answer is that every single reference that has to be with a group of people is on its face regarded as wrong.

i guess i just get tired of the “woke” talk, when it’s often tied to things people should be doing anyway because it’s the right thing to do

Meh.
I think people, especially Americans, are overly sensitive.

easy to say when you are part of the race and demographic that’ve been in power for the entirety of American history and beyond

Sorry, just don't agree with that line of thinking/angle.
I personally am not in 'power' anymore than someone else here in the US.
Just think people are overly sensitive to words.

But it's OK to think differently - we just differ.

So, does that mean you gonna come walk a mile in my shoes?

sure?

what group are you a part of that has been disparaged and/or discriminated against?

my impression is that you’re a white, heterosexual male...i apologize if i’m wrong

I just don't agree with at length with what you're throwing down or implying - trying to segment me and then trivialize my opinions on the subject because of who I am - doesn't work and is hypocritical if you think about it logically - as if a white, heterosexual male has never had individuals treat him poorly because of the way he looks, or acts, or where he goes to school, or what clothes he wears, or what kusports bored he posts on. And yes, also, it's very possible I have been disparaged/discriminated/attacked because of being white before.

I'm not denying discrimination of different races/sexes by many individuals across the world.
I'm just saying people are overly sensitive. And those people can include people of different races/sexes.

It's not really worth discussing on these boreds.

I think people are overly sensitive and the conquest to make things the way 'they should be' has gotten out of control.

I get that people don't think it's out of control.
