Late shot clock is why Mitch is getting so many shot attempts and why we’re turning the ball over so much. It’s badly designed offense.

Not many of our guards are driving to score or driving to assist. They just hand off around the perimeter for 30 seconds or watch as 3 guys collapse on McCormack as he takes an awful 15 footer.
Yep. Watch the Gonzaga and Baylor games, and even the Okie State and Texas games, and you see a complete mismatch in full-court tempo and suddenness in half-court sets. It's like we're playing in molasses on both ends (and the other teams look like how we're used to looking).

We ran the court against TCU after every rebound. Check that box score. Similar strategy against WVU.

Really odd that they haven't done it since. I mean they ran, and ran, and ran.

Since then, they've slowed down and tried to win in the half court.

This team doesn't have the guy to control the offense in a half court offense like they have for the last 10 years with a mix of Sherron, Tyshawn, Frank, Devontae and Dot.

Baylor is one of the best defensive teams in the country, with speed too, and did well to get back on defense to where we had to run our half court sets.

I would argue that nearly every single possession around the 15-20 second mark in the shot clock we have a guard who fails to take a fairly open 3, probably because he’s afraid to get yelled at by Self...

We are 7/10 in turnover %. 7/10 in free throw rate and 10/10 in tempo.

That’s about as telling as it gets.

Holding the ball too long... Too many jump shots, McCormack included.

you think?

I'm hoping we get to the point our guards are afraid to get yelled at if they don't shoot.

Ochai Christian and Jalen need to be trigger happy.

It’s Bill’s job to ensure we are never, ever completely outclassed in our own league.

The box score last night was deceiving. At first glance it looked pretty even. And maybe it was? Outside of Butler they didn’t have much... That said, we could’ve played so, so much better than we did. Silly mistake after silly mistake.

Self's reactions with this team have been very Un-Self-like. I thought it was just the pandemic, and he didn't want to yell at players in an empty gym with mic's that could pick him up. But he hasn't really gotten mad, chewed anyone's ass, and even in press conferences he has not been critical much of this team.

McCormack is 53-123 (43.1%) on the season. That is terrible.

If Self is going to stand by McCormack as our best player, figure out how to get him better looks. He should absolutely be shooting above 50%!

Exactly. He sounds soft. The team is starting to reflect it as well...

He was TERRIBLE the first three games. Take those out and he's shooting 51%.

He was also terrible last night, but it was the turnovers not the shooting %.

He's also averaging two turnovers per game. That's horrendous for a post guy with no playmaking responsibilities.

Yes.
He's shooting 50% in B12 play - which is acceptable.
You'd want that to be closer to 52-53%.

I think Self handles Dmac differently because he's kind of a head case. He plays like an overthinker. Otherwise, Self's press comments on him don't make any sense.

So I was on a Zoom call for work that had Self as the guest speaker and maybe this will bring more clarity to the last couple of posts.

1. Self mentioned this has been a different year with EVERYTHING going on so his methods have changed. He has learned to be more flexible and open to change but still stick to his core values and principles. (we will see about that)
2. He said he has mellowed out over the years and tries to not publicly call out his players. Instead he has a different word for each of his players that he will say when they aren't doing something right. His example he gave was Doke could be such a 'baby' and didn't like being called out in front of his peers. So instead Self came up for a word for Doke when he was playing or acting 'soft'.
3. Because of everything going on this year Self has adapted a strategy that he is just going to 'go with it' and not let all of things going on around him bring him or the team down. Mentioned there are enough negative things going on to do that.
4. Because we all need a funny story...Self was on a recruiting visit to watch Brandon Knight. He is sitting in the gym and gets a call from KT. KT says, 'Coach the Twins shot someone at the Towers. It was a softball players mom or something'. Self starts freaking out, cancels the in-home with Knight because he wanted to get back to address the issue. KT, at the beginning of story had forgotten to mention that she was shot with an air soft gun.
