Gutter, your examples are extreme.

Why worry about things that you cannot control? I understand it sucks if a $60,000 salary kid living with his parents gets a stimulus but others don’t. Maybe he has student loans. But why waste energy thinking about it?

Eat ice cream for breakfast. Trust me, it makes you feel better

You're right and I actually thought about that when I made the post. I was tempted to add - and the drug dealer, "arms dealer", and bookie used Billy's money to send to back to their "drug dealer", "criminal", "rapist" friends who have chosen to stay in Mexico.
Or perhaps the drug dealer, arms dealer, and bookie eat for free, don't need to buy gas, nor pay rent.

We can discuss different scenarios and what ifs all day long but my bottom line is that I'm someone who strongly feels that if the goal was to stimulate the economy courtesy of our government (I assume using tax payer $), then shouldn't EVERY tax payer be given the opportunity and responsibility for doing that?

But if you’re in a bracket that’s doing well enough to not get a stimulus, aren’t you doing well enough?

$1400 isn’t exactly gonna be the difference between whether that dood can finally get a mortgage instead of living with his parents

Thanks for your post.
No doubt my examples are extreme but each and every day I am faced with extremities.
Sometimes I minimize them, sometimes I maximize them. It's one of my many faults.

"Why worry about things you cannot control"?.... Is a fantastic question and one I need to focus on more.
As someone who admittedly struggles with the "serenity prayer" in that I can't always figure out what I can and cannot change and perhaps (probably) I lack the wisdom to know the difference, I also at times question what I should and shouldn't try and control and what should and shouldn't be important to me - and to what degree/s.
Overall, the stimulus checks are not something I harp on but when it's being discussed on here, I feel a desire to chime in with my thoughts and feelings.
When I go take a walk in two hours, hopefully stimulus checks won't be on/in my brain.

How financially well one is doing OVERALL is not 100% based on salary.
Heck, I know people who make less money than me who have a net worth that is a lot more than mine.

I think we all can agree that TODAY there is no perfect system in regards to taxation and government "handouts".
I am completely torn on how I feel in regards to different tax rates - and determining who exactly is deserving, in need of, and how much people should get in terms of "handouts".

Am I wrong to believe that there have been multiple "handouts" to the same people and multiple reasons given for them?

I think it's absurd that the stimulus has had no CoL testing; someone making $75k in Kansas City is in a much different situation than someone in San Francisco, DC, NYC, etc.

And of course that was the idea behind how the city-hating (and everything that goes with that...) Trump administration went down the path.

I also think they should have done the stimulus on no-fee prepaid debit cards rather than checks. If the idea was to get the money out into the system, anyway.

Hardly a "trust fund kid".
Accusing me of "railing against people getting some assists" is fine but that's not really what I am "railing against".
As I have said many times, I'm all for good people who are in NEED getting financial help.
Problem is our government isn't giving it to some good people who are in need and is giving it to others that are not such good people and who are not in need.
As far as "stimulating the economy", I have seen MANY stores and restaurants in Chicago closing for good while I see people pissing away their "stimmy" money at places such as Louis Vuitton, Gucci, etc. Big differences between needs and wants and excess and moderation.

More things change the more they stay the same. In the Reagan era race-baiters were railing against Welfare Queens buying lobster. Now they have moved on to Louis Vuitton.

Progress??

I admit my ignorance. Please forgive me, how is being given multiple stimulus check during a pandemic in 2020/2021 "the same" as Welfare Queens being given welfare checks in the 1980s?
I'll say it yet again, I have no issues with stimulus checks being given out - to good people-who are using it and "paying it forward" to those in need.
My main issues are with how it was determined who "qualifies" (and who doesn't), what amounts people received, and how SOME people have chosen to use (or not use) the money.
That's all. If people find fault in my issues, so be it. We all aren't going to agree on/about everything.

So, somewhat related to this.... my neighbor owns a pot shop. He's having a record year. He said its crazy how much is being spent on weed this year compared to others and he also said that his spikes have coincided with the stimulus payments. I guess the pot industry has been booming across the state this year.

Some of that is just going to happen as it increases user base from legality etc...but, some of it is certainly stimulus money and extra unemployment bump money

MJ23 wrote: Wed May 05, 2021 6:53 am My complaint is that I feel if the main goal of stimulus checks is/was for people to spend the money to stimulate the economy, then why not give a "stimulus" check to every tax paying American?
On a related note, I realize the government can't make people spend their stimulus checks to stimulate the economy so I am a bit curious to know how many people who received stimulus checks did NOT use the money to stimulate the economy.
For example, did Billy who makes 60K a year, lives at home with his parents, and has no real expenses use his money to buy drugs, an illegal gun from a gang banger, and make illegal gambling wagers - while Johnny who makes 80K a year, lives in a house with a $2,000 a month mortgage, has a $400 a month car payment, and is paying off a student loan, didn't get a check - but he would have gone to the local restaurant or bodega and helped a ma and pa survive and keep their store open?
Because since a higher percentage of high earners don't need the money, a higher percentage of those people just tuck it away in an investment account and don't spend it.
