I think it's the difference between first and second weekend. And the week after the first weekend blows chunks when we're out already.

Strange feeling.

It's been a while since I felt like we've got no chance to win it all heading into the tournament.

Last year, we had major issues too, I guess.
We had some heated debates over how good the team was last year going into the tourney.
Even with their flaws, I felt confident that they were a top 10 team but maybe not a true 1 seed and figured if they got hot with Wilson and Dick catching fire at the right times, they could win.

I don't see that with this team.
I don't think we are a top 10 team.
I'm not even sure i'd put us in the dark horse contenders.

I was optimistic for a LONG time this year.

My optimistic outlook about this roster has been crushed by their consistent crappy performance.

Once KM and HD cooled off from 3, we've looked pretty average. I think we peaked in November/December.

Here's my new hot take...

HD is the least impactful 1st or 2nd team AA I remember at KU. He puts up big numbers, and yet I don't ever feel like he can put the team on his back and win games in the clutch.

We just can't do anything easily.

We don't have the athletes or depth to play pressure defense and then run, and we don't have the shooters or ballhandlers to play efficient half-court offense. We don't have a strong rim-protector at the back, and we don't have a strong second rebounder to take advantage of Hunter clearing things out with his size.

The pieces we have aren't good enough, and even what we have doesn't fit together right besides.

DC called him Dedric before he even stepped foot here.
Prophet.

I think we are describing the limitations of the position, generally? And what happens when you don't have anyone scary with the ball, generally?

In a more negative way though.

I think HD is great as a 2nd or 3rd "best" player. But he needs to be surrounded by guys like CB and Och, rather than KM and Kj.

In part because he's an excellent passer. Which comes back to the roster-building point.

Shouldn't have forced Yesufu out. He'd have been better for us this year than Elmarko or McDowell.

If Hunter was a good defender ( and also, though some don't agree, had another gear of effort ) we'd be far better.

I don't think there's limitations...you want a guy who can score in the post around 55% or better...you'll draw attention ( like ous's snapshot ), pick up fouls and get high percentage points.

You get 25 points and 10 rebounds from your big that's something.

But yes, you'll want to pair that with other skillsets - and our best player on the team is hobbled and we have no one who can put fear into the hearts of a backtracking or unprepared defense by attacking the basket.

Yesufu was a worse shooter than even Elmarko.
And also worse defensively.
At least Elmarko can bother some people when on the ball.

But it'd have been his 3rd year at KU. I think the continuity would have been better. And the defensive understanding would have undoubtedly been better, even if the indivudal defensive ability was inferior.

He's shooting 35% at Washington State. For whatever it's worth (not much).

Not worth much.
Look at his overall FG%.
:\

Ah, also, only 6 games played.

To be fair, he only played in 6 games.
