Jefferson and Paine both supported the French Revolution and, in so doing, conflated ours with theirs (in Jefferson's case, quite literally). Jefferson prattled on about the tree of liberty needing to be refreshed with the blood of tyrants and patriots, yet he spent the American Revolution on a diplomatic mission and completely misunderstood the the point of the French Revolution, thinking it was akin to ours -- which, of course, it was not.
Paine was even worse, although Paine, unlike Jefferson, actually paid for his stupidity in real terms: after being elected to the French National Assembly, he was tossed in prison by Robespierre, plotted with Napoleon to invade Britain, was denied citizenship upon his return to the US by Gouverneur Morris, was denied burial by the Quakers, and had his bones dug up by a fan who took them home, where they were lost.
The American Revolution was as Kirk and Burke put it, "a revolution not made but prevented." It was a war waged by Englishmen against Englishmen to secure the rights of Englishmen, made necessary only by the geographical complications of Empire. The French Revolution was something else altogether, a stupidly radical solution to a nevertheless real problem that resulted in disaster and solved nothing. And most people in this country think the two were connected or related in some way, in large part because of Jefferson and Paine, who intentionally conflated the two in the public imagination.
Give me liberty or give me death! Dood. It's a paper facemask.

Jefferson was an astute man, he probably quite understood the point of the French Revolution. But, he wasn't much one to let reality stand in the way of high flying rhetoric.

You're right. That's more likely the case.

Jefferson was also the first, in a long line of presidents, who extended the power of the executive branch and now were even more vulnerable when a bad president gets elected, i.e. right now.

well fortunately the founding fathers also established a system of checks and balances, so if a bad president gets elected then the senate will keep him in check.

The Judiciary is also supposed to be a check, works if the DOJ has a degree of independence and the judges aren't ideologues.

Illini - Dis u?
The man, George Falcone, 50, of Freehold, N.J., was shopping for groceries at a Wegmans store in Manalapan, N.J., on Sunday evening when a worker asked him to move away from her and a food display because he was too close, the state attorney general, Gurbir S. Grewal, said on Tuesday.
The authorities said that Mr. Falcone leaned in close to the worker to cough and allegedly laughed, telling her that he was infected with the virus. Mr. Falcone later told two other store employees that they were lucky to have jobs, officials said.
Mr. Falcone was charged with making a terroristic threat in the third degree and fourth-degree of obstructing administration of law, Mr. Grewal said. Both charges are considered felonies in New Jersey.
The second charge stemmed from Mr. Falcone’s refusal to provide his name and driver’s license for 40 minutes to a police detective who had been part of a security detail at the supermarket, the authorities said. Mr. Falcone was also charged with harassment, they said. The authorities did not say whether Mr. Falcone actually has the virus.
“These are extremely difficult times in which all of us are called upon to be considerate of each other — not to engage in intimidation and spread fear, as alleged in this case,” Mr. Grewal said in a statement.

So, publicly outed as a thought criminal and then beaten to death?

This country has lost its fucking mind.
I know, right? They should have beat that non-mask-wearer to death!
Whole lotta unknowns in that video.
Mask/s mandatory in the store? Where was the manager? What was actually being said? Did the non-mask wearer mouth off?
DC is 100% right that the country has lost it's fucking mind (in terms of the mask fiascos and other coronavirus insanity) but this country lost it's fucking mind long before any of us were born.

It is a feature of human nature that has existed since almost the beginning and is not going anywhere, regardless of who is in the White House.

Armed white men lynching Kentucky’s governor in effigy outside his home while children watch and Lee Greenwood blares in the background is peak 2020 America.
