I think part of it is that they're trying to capitalize on favorable matchups. Jimmy and Tucker are guarding Tatum and Brown, so most of the time Smart has a good individual matchup against below average defenders in either Strus or Lowry (or Herro if he's in).

It's amazing Miami is in the conference finals and won so many regular season games. Their roster is not as good as some of these other eastern conference teams. A testament to how good Jimmy Butler is.
