If, and yes I understand it is an if because Monken and Leipold seem to be neck and neck here, Monken does get the job, reports are part of his plan is to hire a sitting OC and let them run their system. He wants to be a CEO-type coach that lets his coaches coach and his coordinators run their game plan. If he hires an OC that exclusively runs the triple option out of the Flexbone, then we'll worry about that. His offense is going to depend a lot more on the OC he would hire rather than where he's coached before.

I wish we had enough culture that a specific offense was part of our culture.

I think Goff should sit the candidates down one at a time over a couple beers, so they're honest, and just ask if they plan to completely dismantle the roster so that they have a built-in excuse to win 3 total games in their first 3 years. If they don't plan to do that, I'm fine with whoever we hire.

I think I'll actually fucking loose my mind if I read an article 2 years from now about how we have the fewest scholarship athletes of any team and have a recruiting class of 16 players because that's all the scholarships we had.

The rosters is in decent shape, keep it, make it better, and start winning games. No more excuses.

What if one of the candidates says I only drink wine spritzers.

Didn't think about that as a possibility but I could see it. Just assumed that was Dan Lanning he was referring to and hoping it was Ryan Held.

I meant it as a joke.
No way Bienemy would come near this garbage fire.

Listening to Aqib's podcast....

Aqib and Harris both mentioned reaching out to Les and previous coaches about players they knew about who could be guys that KU should look after. Said they never heard anything back and they finally got fed up and stopped calling. Aqib mentioned that with the hiring of Stuck that should be corrected.

I will say this. For as dog-crap awful as David Beaty was as a football coach, he did good a job building relationships with guys like Talib and Harris and got them back to campus.

Beaty was a players coach. All of those guys he coached when he was an assistant here and then when he was the HC absolutely love the guy. I met him a couple of times through former players and the guy was a really nice person to talk and hang out with. I could see how players would like him.

The problem was, like you mentioned he was 'dog-crap awful' at the Xs and Os. In fairness to him he should have never got that job to begin with but KU was so strapped for cash at the time he was about the only guy they could afford or was dumb enough to take the job.

I don't think Bienemy would come here but don't think it's all that laughable to call him up and sell him on it. He has to be kind of fed up.

Lots of info we already know but some new names. Mike Elko from A&M. Tom Manning from Iowa State.

Manning a finalist for assistant coach of the year in 2019. NFL assistant for a year. Been with Campbell for quite a while.

Elko a DC for last 10+ years at Bowling Green, Wake Forest, Notre Dame and A&M.

Some thoughts. Elko is a stud DC. Better and more experienced than Lanning at Georgia. Defenses always top 40 in yards allowed per game.

Manning is realllllly interesting. I think he’s the up and comer that has been mentioned previously. Iowa State OC for last 3 years. Broyles finalist in 2019.

I still think Goff picks a sitting HC. But the list is really impressive.

Also the end of the month seems to be the deadline. Which makes sense.

All valid points but you need to understand what you wrote.
Jeff Monken coached for Paul Johnson who ran the TO offense. Then he became a HC at two schools and ran the TO offense. They do not really call plays in the TO offense. You either run it to the left or run it to the right. Dearmon could have been a stud OC but we freaking hired les Miles. Which was a mistake. Les loves two tight ends and a fullback. And when your dumb and you hire a HC that sucks at the offensive game planning then you kinda deserve what you get. So lets hire Monken who is going to hire an OC, say someone like Dearmon. Then lets say we are playing Texas and we game planning. The HC is not going to be any help and if he does get involved most likely a deterrent. I would prefer a HC that would have the skill set to help out maybe even run one side of the ball. Kinda like Riley at OU or Stark at UT.

We don't need a CEO we need a football coach.

No. These guys all mean well but they arent talent evaluators. I’m sure Les, or any HC for that matter gets 100 of calls, emails and texts a day from guys saying, ‘you gotta check this kid out. He is the next so and so’. Maybe 5 out of 100 of those ever pan out.
The part that was bothersome to me was that, at least with ‘Lib’s one side of the story Les never returned his call. I’m sure it wasn’t anything crazy but thought it was interesting how alumni move behind the scenes.

We may never know the true extent of who was really interested and who was anting up their existing pay day but for once KU football actually has legit sitting HCs and up and coming DCs / OCs interested in this job. Between an actual talented staff and a very promising roster this might be the most optimistic I have ever been about the future of KU football.

I can’t believe I just typed that sentence.

I mentioned this early on. Yeah the optics around the program are not great right now. But if you dig deep and see what is truly going on, it's easy to be optimistic. Solid roster full of young kids with a free year of eligibility. You have some damn good coaches interviewing or have interviewed. You have coaches that interviewed at Illinois, Tennesee and others. And with 1 more good year at Buffalo and Army, you'll probably have bigger programs calling.

I think Goff is young but experienced and very detailed and focused in what he wants.

You are the only school hiring a coach. You get to basically pick who you want in a way. All the candidates mentioned have some seriously good qualities. As I stated previously, I think Goff is targeting a sitting HC, because that's what the program needs. But you truly don't know.

The two L's flaming out might be the best thing that could have ever happened to KU. We all knew coming into this that there would be shortfalls with Les. He was essentially hired to be the 'show pony' for recruiting and bring some legitimacy to the program which he did both. Recruited solid high school kids and got the back end of the program to compete with the middle half of the Big 12. Long, was a complete disaster. Other than his first 50 days as sitting AD his only real highlight would be jumping in the pool with the swimming and diving team and exchanging witty banter on Twitter.

As long as KU doesn't screw up this next football hire we maybe very well positioned for the future.

If KU can get their football program to average, like 5.5 wins a season, and the NCAA gets this BB investigation over with, I think we are positioned well.
