From 2017-2019, 3 seasons, all but 4 appearances were starts. He didn't start in 2020 with the shortened season and didn't start 4 games in 2017. But 2018 and 2019, 61 appearances, 61 starts.
Here is what I had read before the game, so I just think it was fair to wonder if it was pitch count rather than just simply not going through the rotation a 3rd time.
It does appear he started games in the spring, but there was no plans for him as a starter this season as we went with a 4-man rotation, but Keller had to be pushed back today for some unknown reason.
Junis has tossed a pair of shutout innings in two relief appearances against Texas so far this season, striking out three of the eight batters he faced. He last worked on Sunday, which would give him just two days off before his start, so you can expect him to be on a pitch count against the Indians.
Junis had made 83 starts for the Royals in the last four seasons with a 4.76 ERA, but struggled last year with a 6.39 ERA in 25 1/3 innings. The 28-year old may have been affected by a late arrival to camp due to a positive COVID-19 test. He worked with his brother in the off-season to develop a cutter and had good results in spring training with ten strikeouts and no walks, allowing just two hits in seven spring training innings.

Blew Bieber's performance in one pitch. Nice.

Nice bounce back. Loved that Lopez was aggressive.

Thanks for putting a huge dent in Junis' confidence to start the season.
I don't see it the same way. He hadn't been preparing for a starting role. I think this outing is much better for his confidence than letting him go out there for the sixth and getting knocked around.
Something to build on.
He just got a vote of no-confidence on his first outing while he was absolutely dominating. That affects players confidence.
I don't think it was a vote of no-confidence at all; he successfully convinced Matheny to leave him in, and then he fanned a guy.
Given that he hadn't been preparing to start, it's pretty reasonable for him to have been at the end of his leash.

I always hate being the visiting team when a team has their home opener. Home team is always going to perform well. That being said, Keller was not good. And I’m glad Matheny had an early hook. Let him know it’s not acceptable.

Per Matheny, it's also not acceptable to go 58 pitches, 5.0 innings, 6 K's, 1 hit, 0 runs.

Still pretty puzzled at that.

Staff and Junis's plan/pitch count was to only go 2 innings.
The positive here is that we might have a starter in Junis with his new cutter.

Jesse Hahn, to me, should have been waived last year. Aims the ball. Badly

Some little league shit. Could've gave up one base and kept the double play in tact, instead gave two free runs.
