That doesn't concern me much. The cap should be going way up again after a year of Covid stagnation. And Mahomes is exactly the sort of guy you can justify.

What you can't have is Frank Clark taking up >13% of your cap to suck. But he will be gone, as will Hitchens.
The contracts given out this last offseason make it clear that the owners fully expect the cap to skyrocket with the new TV deal. Mahomes's contract is fine. In fact, it will probably be increased.

Seems, though, that the cap issues could take the Chiefs out for this season. Mellinger was quite doom and gloom this morning. Wonder if there are locker room issues. It would make sense because they aren't this bad.
It's easy to grin, when your ship comes in, and so on.

I know it's not a satisfying answer, but a whole lot of this really just is rotten luck. Rotten injury luck (exposing threadbare depth), rotten game luck (CEH really isn't a fumbler; at least three of Pat's turnovers were incredibly fluky).
It's probably a lot of things--and the caveat of I have hardly watched any of the Chiefs games. This was just really scathing, and we know Mellinger's style now--he only cracks the window open to keep his anonymous sources happy, but the implications are always sourced and usually what you think they are.

The Chiefs last 6 games, they are 2-4 and looked terribly beatable in the ones I did see. Minnesota, sure, I can envision that stretch. But, the Chiefs have too much to look so ordinary that I think goes beyond luck (on the defensive side of the ball)--wonder if something is up.

But the Chiefs lost, and lost convincingly — so convincingly, in fact, that looking up at eight teams in the AFC is suddenly the least of their concerns.

We are going to focus on the defense here, but don’t let anyone you love pretend that everything else is fine. This group is a mess right now. Their resolve is being challenged by a surprising conspiracy of mistakes and shoddy communication.

Mahomes threw two more interceptions, and it’s fair to point out that one hit Hill in the hands. It’s also fair to point out that the points they’re scoring isn’t nearly enough. On-field bickering comes from a competitive place, and that’s good, but repeated and heated exchanges like the Chiefs are having are a window into underlying problems.

And there wasn't pass interference on 4th and 9 that would have been an incompletion and us taking over on our 30 with just enough time and timeouts to beat the Chargers.

And last nights roughing the passer on Clark. Woof.

I quit watching at halftime after the rain delay. Was tired and figured the Chiefs would blow it. Sorenson needs to be demoted or just kicked off the team. I liked him for years, but now he just seems to be slow and not paying attention to the receivers or reading the plays.

10 turnovers in the last 13 quarters of football for the Chiefs. That seems bad.

Close! "junk" needs to be JUNK!
Except the Chiefs aren't junk or JUNK. If they had an easy schedule (or if there were no refs - according to "logic" on here) they would probably be 5-0.
I'm far from writing them off just yet.

I'm fully prepared for them to miss the playoffs. If they do make it, I'll be pleasantly surprised.

Now you are using my negative logic. You're being pessimistic and then hoping to be happily/pleasantly surprised instead of being optimistic and then getting let down.

If the Chiefs don't win the West I see them still getting a WC spot.
Have to figure Buffalo wins the East but no other teams make the playoffs.
Not sure about the North. One team wins it and another is possibly/probably a WC team.
Looks like Tennessee in the South and no WC team/s.

FUCK THE BOLTS! I don't wish injury on anybody but I predict Herbert the pervert is going to get injured.

The uncomfortable truth here is that the rest of the league has gotten better while the Chiefs have mainly stayed the same and in the case of the defense got worse.
Using an infamous Bill Self line that Super Bowl win was 'fools good' in a sense that the Chiefs thought they were invincible and the front office thought they could get away with adding cheap talent on one year deals to 'fix' the deeper issue of missing on draft class after class and overpaying for veterans. All around the league you hear about teams having good, young talent and outside of Sneed this team is mostly devoid of that talent.

If the goal is to win a Super Bowl every year, which it was and should be then at least right now this team is closer to drafting in the top 10 than they are winning a Super Bowl this year.
Outside of the usual suspects this roster is full of average to below average players.

If I only had a dime for every time you dissed reconstituted potato flakes flash fried into uniform shape.

Chiefs are shaking some things up. Thornhill moved into the starting rotation over Sorensen. Remmers starting at RT over Niang. Niang apparently has a minor hamstring tweak.

Worthless prediction.
Chiefs 30 Football Team 17
Which means it will probably be nothing close to that.

Nice for me to be able to switch back and forth between the Chiefs and Bears but we have a possible hoop championship to be won today in this city and that game will get my attention if the Bears and Chiefs game's aren't close in the 4th Quarter.

No Chris Jones.
No Ward.
I think Redskins score more than 17.

Yet another turnover. Yet another pass directly through Hill's hands to a defender. Go change your cleats, Tyreek.
