No really!

My boss is effectively retired, does whatever he wants all day, only “works” when he’s interested in getting his say, and it’s all his prerogative to do so cuz he’s the one with the capital.

Do you wanna argue he shouldn’t?

So they should just give their house away?

You're talking about a very very small and incredibly specific group of people who, can't afford a home, but suddenly could if only the market dipped slightly due to people not buying vacation homes.
If we’re really gonna discuss my community, there have been short term rental taxes, and existing tax raises, considered that would go toward mitigating the local housing crisis.

But they aren’t getting far, cuz right now the even bigger issue is how many units are renting without obtaining the short term rental license

And I wonder how many temporarily embarrassed millionaire locals still argue in favor of deregulated free markets, rather than a place for them to live.

In fact, the ones who DO want the short term rental license are yall tourists, who are awful disappointed to learn their unlicensed Airbnb rental never sought the requirement to have a local property manager available within an hour of calling when that leaky faucet starts ruining yall’s vacation.

By the way.....this is happening after tearing out a deck and digging a 30 ft 3 ft deep trench to replace a sewer line. It also goes ubder the patio so its gotta go...theb more digging. All will have ti relaced after the new pipe is in. Just one if those expenses a renter doesnt have to worry about. But is going to cost time and money to me....the landowner who has to keep the property running and livable.

I’ve been trying to address this, actually, but I can’t even post something without being quoted 5 times first.

If I want something, it’s for home ownership to be more attainable to more hard working Mericans, rather than have some sort neofeudal model where more and more property is owner by fewer and fewer people, and everyone else is effectively indentured.

Even more generally, I want a society in which not every damn thing has to be about money, and can have some human element to it sometimes too.

Sounds like what has happened is that the growth of your market has now priced many "locals" out of the housing they want. Other people want those properties enough that they will pay a premium to live in that area. That's good and bad. Good for the area because growth is good (more taxes, etc). Bad because some of the people who really like the area now can't afford it. Those people will have to find a new area that is more affordable.

The locals don't "own" the area. They aren't entitled to it just because they liked it first.

Who wants to buy property and have me manage it for you??
That just makes you the property manager, not the owner.

It seems to me more like you have a problem with enforcement of local laws than you do with landlords.

If the housing crisis is that bad, it sounds like what you need is someone to build some lower-priced homes in the area, maybe a couple of apartment buildings, or some townhouses. That sounds like the hero you need. That would be a landlord.

Our septic tank went out a couple years ago, actually.

Our landlord said, “that sucks! But hey can you and beav do me a favor go check out the septic system, I forgot where the lid to it is so just go look for it in the yard. If you can’t figure it out, can you call around for a septic guy? But you guys try to fix first. And in the meantime, better not use the plumbing.”

How is that something a renter doesn’t have to worry about?

Approximately 65% of us own our homes.

Of that other 35% there is at least a decent portion who live in large cities where they choose to rent.

Homeownership is attainable for you, but your career/income and location don't fit together. It is always going to cost more to live in popular places. You live in a very popular place. You're not entitled to that place anymore than anyone else.

Sorry, but sounds like a made up story.

And if it isn't then you're not very smart for staying a "couple more years" in his property.

There are laws landlords have to follow and if they don't you can file a lawsuit against them.

Then you're in luck because not every damn thing is about money. Who you spend time with, where you spend your time and what you do with your time are all decisions that don't have to have money involved in them if you choose.

But owning property is about money, especially when you live in an area where people desire to be. Trust me, I'd love to go back to the days where I could get a 3 bedroom house in Colorado Springs for $800 a month and the most expensive lift ticket was Vail at $52 a day. But that isn't today's reality.

Yeah, but if you present a general problem based on one experience, and then the no one else has the shared experience, maybe that single bad experience is not good support for the problem you're presenting because it's rare or a one off.
