no way i could’ve survived working 40hrs/wk at the first, and i don’t think any reasonable person would expect to, as it isn’t that kind of job

even after becoming manager at the second job and putting in 40+hrs/wk, i still REQUIRED having roommates in order to just get by. sure, nobody forced me to keep that second job, but it’s not like there are a lot of opportunities when you’re in your early 20s and trying to go to school

and these aren’t even the kinds of jobs i’m really talking about. it used to be the case that a FAMILY could do more than just get by on a single school teacher’s salary. that’s laughable today
Agree with this 100%.

School teachers are ridiculously underpaid.....

McDonalds drive thru workers are not even remotely similar.

Is the burger generating the capital or the flipper? The burger....and if the flipper can prove otherwise (that without him flipping their sales decline significantly, then i bet management would give him a raise). The burger is basically selling itself by marketing and branding. Truthfully the burger is generating the capital for the flipper by creating a reason for them to be employed. Is the flipper on the hook for cost of goods sold? No. The flipper isn't "generating capital". The flipper is performing a service for a paycheck.

The burger is the product being sold. That’s the capital generated.

And that burger don’t cook itself. (Yet, but that’s a whole nother tangent)

The burger needs to be cooked by that friendly crime fighting dolphin you mentioned

Keep it up ousdahl, you're working these clowns brilliantly.

Some of you really need to develop a sense of humor. My god, some of you are dense.

No the burger doesn't cook itself. But it doesn't require a skilled worker.

This is maybe the dumbest thing ever discussed.

Should minimum wage be more? Sure. But pretending these types of jobs should be paid enough to support an entire family is silly. This isn't skilled labor. They are for HS/College kids, part time supplemental income, etc.

I would be curious to see what % of people who work the drive thru/counter/kitchen jobs for 2yrs+ end up promoted to shift manager, assistant managers, managers, etc. I bet it is pretty high.

Ousy, Trad, Illi, and TDub's discussion is a pretty good one.
Only thing I care to contribute is - USA!
That and I'll spare you any of my philosophical bullshit except to say often things aren't as simple as they seem.

Now back to the dumbfuck.....

5 yes or no questions for a Friday evening......
1) Assuming Biden is inaugurated in January, do you think he will attend Biden's inauguration?
2) Do you think he will leave a note in the Oval Office for Biden?
3) 4 years from now will he still be married to Melania?
4) 4 years from now will any TRUMP or Kushner be serving a prison sentence?
5) In the next 4 years will Trump have a statue of himself built and placed in Washington D.C.?

Trump may not go to jail, but Kushner likely will.

1. Yes. I figure reluctantly at first but the man has to have a final swan song. As degrading as it may be to him.
2. Yes. Written in his writing but words someone else has given him to write. Maybe I shouldn't say written in his writing. It very well may be "typed".
3. If they are both still alive - yes.
4. "Serving" no. Found guilty of crimes you and/or I would be in prison for. Probably.
5. Difficult question. If he commissioned someone to build it and D.C. would allow it to be placed in the "district" - yes.

1. Gotta start those 2024 campaign rallies at some point, right?
2. Yeah he’ll leave a note - it’ll be his name signed in sharpie on a legal pad, cuz I’m not sure he knows how to write anything else
3. Depends on the prenup
4. Not if they can sneak off to some asylum country with no extradition first
5. I can’t do better than 99’s answer

This is getting much closer to the problem than addressing minimum wage jobs that aren't meant to be careers.
