I’ll take that with a grain of salt. Staying “very involved” is the sort of thing that is (1) nice to say, and (2) not all that compatible with becoming ESPN’s prize college hoops asset.

Take out the two titles and that argument isn't very strong. Dude had A LOT of first weekend exits.

Yeah and depends on his level of ESPN involvement as well. Greenberg is on every night, because he needs a job. But if Wright is a GameDay only guy when there are only like 6-8 College GameDay's--becomes more manageable.

Philly writer:

https://lancasteronline.com/sports/nba/ ... d6687.html

"Truths about how the college basketball game had changed. How it had become less about teaching proper pick-and-pop techniques, less about posting his point guards on the blocks, less about frenetic help defenses whose clockwork rotations made five decent athletes elite team defenders against the best the NBA would have to offer in that June’s draft.

More about one-and-dones. More about name, image, and likeness (NIL) negotiations. More about transfer portals, and which player would enter the draft, and when. When those topics arose, Wright’s eyes grew narrow, and squinty, and hard.

When he speaks about why he retired, as reports Wednesday indicated he will do, he surely will say that he needs more time with his family, and there might be other reasons. Wright admitted at the Final Four last month that, “You think about it after each year.”

And each year, things get less soulful. Less pure. Some of the joy of coaching has left Wright’s game. You can see it in his eyes.

Speak with him about defensive theory, pace, and transition defense, his eyes looked like George Clooney’s.

Speak with him about the paradoxical business of amateur sports, his eyes looked like George Kennedy’s.

Wright coaches pure basketball purely. Maybe that’s why he’s walking away."

When Bill finally got his Final Four, the question was then if Wright would ever get his.

Sorry it bothered you both so much ( wonder why ).

But it is bullshit. You don't need a team full of transfers and one and dones to win, and it's just assuming that (false) premise. The entire starting lineup of the national champs had been at that school at least three years each.

It’s not assuming that.
It’s just saying that’s a big part of the sport ( because it is now and will only get bigger ) and it seemed, according to the guy that covered Nova, that Jay was not into that part of the sport.

I wouldn't assume it's going to get bigger if the results don't improve. Teams like Texas that are full of transfers are worse than the sum of their parts, while teams that have played a lot together are better than the sum of their parts.

The media has a frenzy with the transfer market because it makes for exciting stories, and then they go and claim that the frenzy they make a bigger deal out of than it actually is, is ruining the game because it's such a big deal. They're manufacturing the problem and then bitching about it.

Said better than I could have. That's my issue with the columns today. These guys were just waiting for some big event to happen to make a pent up old man rant and then made Wright's retirement about themselves.

I am sure Jay Wright has never engaged in recruiting practices that aren't allowed. He does it all by the book. He is all about purity of amateurism.

But it's hagiographical bullshit. Knob-slobbery.

* One-and-done was a reality for all but two or three years of Wright's Villanova career. Early NBA exits have been a reality for the entirety of Wright's coaching career.
* "NIL negotiations" (which I'd imagine Wright wasn't involved in, anyway???) have only been a reality for one year.

Getting burned out on "the paradoxical business of amateur sports" is fine, and of course Wright's (or anyone's prerogative). Walking away is his choice to make, and no rational person would begrudge him the chance to leave on his own terms, with lots of life to go.

BUT, it's also 100% true that one of the "paradoxes" - indeed, perhaps the singular paradox - of college basketball is that guys like Wright have eight-figure net worths, made off the backs of unpaid labor. Unpaid labor with a fairly prevalent demographic profile.

That's the deal Wright made, for 20+ years.

Walking away when things are "changing" (if that's the reason here) says a lot of things about Wright. Many of them are good. Some, perhaps, aren't.

CrimsonNBlue wrote: Thu Apr 21, 2022 7:18 am Parrish is a garbage writer, lol. Just an i.e.

“But the truth is that a larger number of great college basketball coaches are probably going to spend the coming years and decades making enough money in their 40s and 50s so that they can leave it all behind at an earlier age than the previously expected-retirement-age for great college basketball coaches.”

That’s a “truth?” He’d fit in pretty well around here. Should maybe check with his anonymous sources again.
"But my opinion is that..." would have been the appropriate way to write that, no matter how convinced that his opinion is accurate. And yes, I would also assume that the astronomical salaries of today's elite coaches will also lead to some retirements at earlier ages than those of their predecessors who were paid at a lower rate.

And he just made a Final Four with zero transfers on his roster so it's not like he should feel he has to fish in that pool. EDIT; he has one transfer, Caleb Daniels, who transferred in prior to the immediate waiver time period.

Why, because we think the media hysteria over transfers and NIL is trumped up BS? Aren't you one who rails on about the media making non-stories into stories all the time?

It is quite possible that both Parrish and Hayes are right though and that some coaches are tired of it.
Jay will say the right thing in his press conference, he's not a moran.
