Opted for the rooftop. I'll spare you the drama. Just give you some visuals.

Have we fallen into a mesmerized state that makes us accept as inevitable that which is inferior or detrimental, as though having lost the will or the vision to demand that which is good?

65 and rain here. Only adding to the flooding.
I'll work on some projects around the house. May fire up the gas grill on the covered deck.

Re: Happy Fourth of July!
Day started out beautiful - weather wise. See photo of sunrise over glass like Lake Michigan below and see photo of current weather.
On the 4th of July my mother likes to go to Millennium Park because they have a patriotic symphony concert in a beautiful outdoor venue.
https://www.grantparkmusicfestival.com/ ... day-salute
Typically I join her because I'm a good son. Today I am not going to join her because she was excited to go with a group of old fucks that she is friends with and I didn't feel the need/desire to join them.
It's not supposed to rain but there is a small to medium possibility of a storm right around the time she is supposed to arrive at the concert. One year we went and there was a torrential downpour that broke out - and it was miserable!
I'm going to opt for a bike ride, hang out at the beach and read and listen to music, come home and cook/grill my burgers, and watch some fireworks from the rooftop.

Re: Happy Fourth of July!
9:54am. I just came back from the grocery store and I have never seen it more dead in my neighborhood on the 4th of July - other than during the hight of Covid - and even then it seemed more alive.
I'm not sure what gives. It's gloomy outside but not raining. Any idea/s? Other than people knew I was out and about and were trying to avoid me.

That ended years ago because the assholes behaved like assholes and needed to shoot people at the celebration - in consecutive years. City put a kibosh on that.
We would visit grandparents on the South Side every summer. When I was a kid in the late 60's early 70's we would go downtown on the 4th and stand near Buckingham Fountain and watch the fireworks. I think they set them off at Meigs Field back then, but maybe Navy Pier as that was empty then. For kids from KC it was quite the spectacle. The view from Millennium Park now, is a spectacle with or without fireworks.

Re: Happy Fourth of July!
Gutter vent/rant for the day.
I could post some pics from last night but I will spare you.
Someone please explain this ("this" being many things I am going to type about) to me.
Weekly, all residents receive an email from our building management that includes the following.....
Roof Top Etiquette
In order for all residents to enjoy the Roof Top, please bear in mind the area is shared by Axis residents. As a courtesy reminder, please note-1) No Smoking, 2) No Glass Containers, 3) No Music/speakers.
Also, in the not so distant past, all residents received an email stating that due to people having large parties and inviting outside guests, residents have not been able to enjoy the rooftop and use the amenities. Therefore, you are not allowed to bring more than 2 guests per resident on/to the rooftop unless you reserve the party room.
On Wednesday (the 3rd) we had a shit ton of people on the rooftop to view the Navy Pier fireworks.
Many residents invited multiple (more than 2) guests. So be it, but then it became so crowded that security locked the doors so people (RESIDENTS - and guests) couldn't go from the party room out on to the rooftop - OR COME BACK IN.
HEY DUMBFUCK WHO MADE THAT DECISION - DID YOU NOT CONSIDER IT COULD BE A FIRE/EMERGENCY HAZARD TO LOCK THE DOORS - preventing the people on the rooftop from escaping if they needed to?
I could maybe understand if security was standing by the doors to easily unlock them, but security was nowhere to be found after the doors were locked. I don't know who eventually opened a side/back door (it had been locked from the outside) but for over an hour ALL the doors were locked from the inside and the outside. NOT COOL!
Here is where I could use some explanations.
Last night I went up to the rooftop. Clearly people had multiple (more than 2 guests). Ok not a big problem being that there was the ability for residents to find places to sit and stand, but.... There were a shitload of "glass containers" (BIG problem with that is we have had instances of people dropping beer and wine bottles off the ledge - that then fall 60 stories to the ground - and if someone is under them and gets hit, they die) and problems with people dropping "glass containers" on the ground on the 60th floor and people cutting themselves. No glass containers means no glass containers.
There were people smoking (cigars, cigarettes, weed, and vaping). Not a big deal to me but no smoking means no smoking.
There were people who were playing LOUD music through speakers. Not a big deal to me but sometimes it is a big deal to me when I go up to the rooftop to relax and there is shitty music blasting. No music/speakers means no music/speakers.
In other words, last night there was/were blatant violations and disregard of the rules.
So..... 3 questions.....
1. There was not a single security person on the rooftop at any point for the hour plus that I was up there last night. Why not?
2. How/why does the building make rules but then not enforce their rules - and why are there no repercussions for those who break them?
3. Two parter. It seems to be a generational thing. Many (most?) 20 something year olds feel rules don't apply to them.
a. Why not?
b. When you were 20 something years old, I assume like me, you probably weren't 100% respectful but hopefully like me, do you feel generally speaking, you were a more respectful person than many if not most 20 something year olds are today?
P.S. We have a security woman in the building named Sharon who works during the day.
She MAKES people abide by the rules and as someone put it to me perfectly about 3 or 4 weeks ago - "She doesn't play and lets it be known but I really like her, she's so nice".
The world would be a better place if every security person on this planet was a Sharon - and there were less Gutters.

Re: Happy Fourth of July!
Yeah gutter, that would piss me off. If someone had an emergency and was locked in there? Big time lawsuit. I'd blame security for letting it get out of hand in the first place, why can't they be proactive on this. Should not have been a surprise. I'm assuming you pay top dollar in rent, I would expect the rules to be enforced.

I spoke with Sharon on the way out to work this morning. She was 100% in agreement with me and she was pissed off about it. Told me to please send an email to management. I just don't want to be "that guy". I am considering trying to come up with a constructive somewhat positive way to express my feelings and concerns. I have all day at work to think about it.

Re: Happy Fourth of July!
I think I was more respectful than the average 20 year old when I was in my 20s but I was still a person who didn’t think that rules would always apply.
I just generally think that 20 year olds act like that every generation and the older generations will eventually say get off my lawn.
I do think this latest generation is annoyingly in touch with their feelings far more than any other which I don’t actually find to be as healthy as people make it out to be—because it borders/becomes narcissism.
