I’d rather be a team that only is good every four years than a Calipari team of the new age.
Roi 1999, 2000 wouldn’t bug me if our coach was transparent.

So how bad is hunter's shoulder? There's no point playing mccullar in the big 12 tournament with a still nagging knee injury. Might as well rest him for the ncaa

Agreed. We're "good" this year. Just not "elite" legit title contenders.

Mrs. 99 and I spent the day running around the TCs. Just watched the 1st half. Geebus that was awful. Skipped the 2nd.

Isn’t that sort of what we’re doing right now?
17-18 — FF (old guys)
18-19 — dogshit
19-20 — FF+ quality (old guys)
20-21 — dogshit-ish
21-22 — Nat (old guys)
22-23 — asterisk
23-24 — runny dogshit
* Dogshittiness is relative of course; Kansas math.

But do so without hiring mercenaries for a year.

We've got maybe our oldest team this year.
Lots of 4th 5th and even 6th year players.
If, and big if, hunter and mccullar are healthy for the ncaa, this team still could salvage a frustrating season and make a run.
We are built for the ncaa, 2 games in 3 days, with more in game rest with tourney TV timeouts
We are not built to win 4 games in 4 days in the big 12 tourney. I don't see any point in trying to play mccullar or hunter there

But do so without hiring mercenaries for a year.
Then Self better start recruiting better. Otherwise, it's not possible.
There are a lot of really good freshman contributing to the top teams in CBB.
We've got Furphy (9pts 4reb avg) but we'd need much more (in the recruiting dept without HD and KM).
Then again, the top freshman are often one year mercenaries too. So there's that.
I think I would still enjoy a team full of DHs and KJs, even if instead of being a top 3 team every year we are only a top 20ish team every year.
But I'd definitely prefer to be top 3 with mercenaries and chances to win more nattys.

The problem with freshman is that Bill rarely lets them play through mistakes...which makes the team overly reliant on the starters...which fucks the depth up.

This year, the young guys and newcomers don't deserve to play through mistakes a lot of the time.
This is not a talented team.

Correct. Bill doesn't excel at instilling confidence in new players. Especially ones that aren't great at defense. His short leash method has been successful for a long time, but might not work in the transfer/NIL era we are entering

So instead of letting the newcomers have a longer leash, he rode the starters until the wheels fell off...which is why this team has gotten progressively worse as the season has gone on.

Basically.
The newcomers weren't good enough this year unfortunately. 2 different paths to the same disappointing result I am afraid.
I see a lot of teams with a lot better players than we've got unfortunately. And that's a complete 180 from where I was a month or so ago.

And that’s why I can’t really get behind “well if we just give Kevin and Hunter the week off” as a magic elixir. I think that needs to happen, but I’m also not sure it can undo the damage that’s been done; there’s a reason the same guys that beat Tennessee and UCONN and Houston now look like they belong at the Topeka YMCA.

Let's all take a deep breath, and
remember that things could be so much worse.
