Of course Tyrese Hunter.

McCullar kind of disappointed last season, but he's a tough veteran.
Hunter #1.
After that I like the Missouri State kid.
Same.

Wish we could get some clarity on Jalen. I don't think anyone is going to tell CB that he has no shot at the 1st Round.
I mean, I'll lie to him, if that will help.

pdub wrote: Mon May 02, 2022 11:14 am We went from 30 to no speed limit in a residential to me. Already cars are going 90 down the street. Ok, the cars have better safety standards, but they are still going 90.

I dont wanna live on that road.
But that's exactly it here. What I said was speed limits changing on open roads. You ignored that for your example.

It's pretty critical to think about who exactly is harmed by change.

Moving the speed limit from 55 to 70+ on open road...hurts nobody, except I guess people with a fundamental, principled aversion to the idea of speed limits being above 55. The rule should change.

Removing speed limits on residential roads hurts a lot of people directly. The rule should not change.

This is a meaningful distinction!

It's not an open road.
Its amateur sports.
Or used to be.

It's still amateur sports (imo) as long as the schools themselves aren't paying the players a salary.

This is just modern "recruiting". Boosters wasting their money on mediocre players like Nijel Pack. Nobody seemed nearly as bothered about Adidas paying our players as they do now about rich boosters. Why is that?

So we're using analogies, or we're not? I'm confused.

i think you lose your amateur status if you can retire after playing 4-5 years.

Our definitions of amateurism differ. That's okay.

But weird that you don't seem think million dollar dorm rooms, full ride scholarships, and stipends ended true amatuerism but this does. Maybe you do?

College athletics, at the top level, stopped being about "students playing sports" a long time ago. Many of these athletes couldn't get accepted into their University based on the academic standards that regular students have to meet for acceptance. They were being enticed by $ (scholarships, athlete living facilities, stipends, coaches getting paid millions, etc). That was just more acceptable forms of compensation in your eyes. But that's not "amateur" either.

No. Because some programs facilities are worlds better than others.
And scholarships are specifically related to the university.
A stipend makes sense - I think an athlete should be able to attend the university without any issues living day to day.

Add on to that, and more to the point, very dirty NIL/pay-for-play money.

I think it's a tad naive to think that the two situations are somehow completely different. Under Armour begged KD to go to the wizards to the tune of nearly $300 million.
Kevin Durant who plays in Brooklyn and has a contract with Nike?
Yes, the same Kevin Durant who is from Baltimore, the location of UnderArmour headquarters.
He didn't sign with EITHER under armour OR the Wizards.

I may just start linking to these questions that have already been answered in the F the NCAA thread.

But this is the entire disconnect.

You're ok with a kid getting some amount of money above and beyond fixed costs, like tuition and rent. But you want that right to stop...somewhere?

Who decides that? And why should they decide that? What purpose is served by someone deciding that?

Let's swing this all the way around and say that KU offered an additional stipend of [$_______], but it was conditioned upon the player assigning NIL rights to the school.

Start with $5, and add zeroes, and tell me where your comfort level stops.

Like I said. A tad naive.

It might just be a coincidence that the biggest stars go to the biggest markets where they sign the biggest endorsement deals and win the most championships playing for teams owned by the country's billionaires.

But relaxed standards for acceptance into a University is okay?

To me, that's where it stops being about a school's students playing on their sports teams. It becomes about building the best teams to make the school money 1st and academics 2nd.

So do you expect everything to be perfect if I have suggestions in a direction of change?
Did I ever say everything was going to be perfect?

So pdub just put up a 30 mph sign and just ticketed the richest dude on the block for going 50 - looks like he's trying to solve the speeding issue on our street.
Yea, but did he notice that there's a pothole forming at the end of the block?

Or, from the F the NCAA thread:

"There are things that are subjective in life that some people agree with and others don't. There are rules in place - and rules are broken - but just because they are being broken doesn't mean that, if you agree with the rules, you just should give up on them.

If the rules are abandoned, just like if there was a law that changed and affected something else I enjoyed or my livelihood, i'd be bummed and try to separate myself from the situation.

The speed limit on my street is 25. It doesn't need to be 25, to me it's more a 35 mph street, it's open enough and not congested. I go over the speed limit on the street. Some people go way over the speed limit. I wouldn't want them to just say, well, fuck it, people are going over the speed limit, let's make this road 80 mph. If I got caught going 33 and was pulled over, i'd accept the ticket/fine, and maybe think about going 25 from then forward."

I kinda wonder if the natural end game to the "amateurism" argument is to make student ath-o-letes pay for everything out of pocket - uniforms, balls, gym time, travel, in addition to tuition and housing, etc.

make it like one of those pee wee club teams?

all those affluent suburban kids surely do it for the love of the game, right?

and if they come from families who can't afford it, well...
