Yet more proof that the administration sees this as a public relations problem to be managed, rather than the public health issue that it is:

Immigration court staff nationwide were ordered by the Trump administration to take down all coronavirus posters from courtrooms and waiting areas.

The Executive Office for Immigration Review, which falls under the Department of Justice, told all judges and staff members in an email Monday that all coronavirus posters, which explain in English and Spanish how to prevent catching and spreading the virus, had to be removed immediately.

“This is just a reminder that immigration judges do not have the authority to post, or ask you to post, signage for their individual courtrooms or the waiting areas,” wrote Christopher A. Santoro, the country’s acting chief immigration judge in a mass email to immigration court administrators nationwide.

oh, it is

who is above the heads of the CDC et al.?

put another way, if there was one single entity that could curb the CDC et al.'s purported prerogatives, what/who would that entity be?

DCHawk1 wrote: Tue Mar 10, 2020 3:13 pmSecond, the FDA and the CDC have been exceptionally jealous of their prerogatives and have stridently resisted attempts to decentralize the testing procedure. While South Korea was setting up 500 testing sites and the WHO was encouraging countries to use open-source German procedures to create test kits, the FDA and CDC refused to budge, insisting that the FDA MUST remain the only coronavirus diagnostic laboratory in the country and the CDC must provide the only approved test kit. FIVE WEEKS AGO, HHS declared a state of emergency and directed the FDA to issue an Emergency Use Authorization to the CDC, allowing it to ship test kits around the country. The CDC did -- and they were faulty, containing a defective reagent. Thus, those labs had to send all specimens back to the CDC, where they were placed at the back of the queue.

Although new diagnostic labs have been approved, to date, the CDC has approved ZERO test kits other than the one it created (by contrast, China has TEN different kits available). The Gates Foundation has pledged $100 million to fight COVID-19, including providing at-home test kits for the Seattle area, but so far, nothing has been approved. Even the State of New York Department of Health, which has created its own testing kit, is not allowed, per the CDC, to use that kit to perform tests.
Trying to understand what you're saying--is the quoted part not an error by the executive branch?
You are correct (natch). And as the head of the executive branch, POTUS deserves all the political blame for the failure of executive agencies to fulfill their missions expeditiously.

But politics and real life ain't the same thing. And if we're content to say, "Stupid Trump fucked this up," then we will, without question, avoid confronting the real issues that actually caused and exacerbated the problems with the CDC and the FDA.
honest question (and i have my presumptions, but don't know for certain), but do you think the task force that trump dismantled that was supposed to prep and deal with this sort of thing, might have curbed the behavior of the CDC/FDA and others?

I think you can make the case that it may have helped some, but then, if you have $4 trillion government that can't function properly function without every tiny component, then you have a giant $4 trillion waste.

Moreover, as I understand it, the task force was not "cut" in the standard "budget cut" sense of the word. Bolton started reorganizing the NSC, and rubbed Rear Adm. Timothy Ziemer the wrong way, prompting him to resign his position as the head of the global health security team. With Ziemer gone, they simply decided not to fill the spot and not to rebuild his team.

right, and i hope i didn't imply that this was part of any standard budget cut (i think Feral and i have both linked to articles that outline this particular group previously)

only tangentially related, curious what the count is now related to the part i bolded, but that's for another thread

This nonsense is similar to Rummy et al cutting military thinking they can fight multiple wars on the cheap. They cut stuff mainly to make their tax cut numbers look less bad. These cuts were cuts on top of the cuts already made! Why do we need four fire engines when three will do! Too bad they didn’t think like that for the n+1 aircraft carrier!

Disliking chinese or spanish people because of it would be racist. Naming it or referring to it because of its origin site is not.
